  • New Search System Installed

Well, I finally got fed up with not being able to find old threads with vb4's existing search system. Its something that has basically been broken since the software was released almost a year ago. Unfortunately, its taking them forever to get it working. There has been an alternate search system discussed over on vb.com for quite some time, but most people were recommending it only for larger forums (1+ million posts), so I really didn't think we needed it. Anyway, in the last few days, I've been trying to find older articles which I KNOW are on here, but have been coming up with tons of unrelated threads. So I decided to try it out...

Problem is, its something that has to be build, configured, etc..., all at the command line. Now, I can usually manage simple command line items, but larger tasks like this taunt me some. One more reason I've been hesitant for so long to install it. But like I said, the last few days pushed me over the edge. So I took on the task. I am happy to say, I got it installed!! It took about 2hrs to get it all figured out and working, but upon doing similar searches from the last couple days, it was more than worth it.

Anyway, check it out, and tell me what you think about it. Hopefully it'll be an improvement to the site, and make finding information that much easier for new users, and old users alike.

Just as a point of reference on how much this has improved the search, when doing a search for "venture head gaskets" using the old system, it would return over a dozen pages of results. This was because it was looking for each word individually, so most of the threads didn't actually include ALL 3 WORDS. When doing the exact same search with the new system, it resulted in 8 threads. Definitely an improved and more accurate result.

There was no option before to search entire string?

There was in the 3.x series of the software, but for some reason the search was altered in the 4.x series. It has caused quite a stir over at vb.com. But, either way, the new search is just that - a search specific application. Therefore, it will function better and faster than anything ever built into the forum software. When you are at the size of this site, the speed probably won't be noticeable though...

  • Fresh Install, New Server
    by SappySE107
Brad got the site up and running again and its finally responsive again! I will be spending some time creating articles based on what I used to have on the old WOT-Tech site before going to Square, as well as posting some more dyno results as we get them @ R&R Motorsports. Still working on what isn't working still, like the avatars, but most seems to be working. Any issues, please post on the forum, or respond to this article....

  • Aftermarket 3500 LX9 Lower Intake Gaskets
    by SappySE107
If you are replacing the lower intake gaskets for whatever reason, its most likely going to be a metal and rubber gasket, like this.

which is great, if you only want it to seal. If you want it to make the power it use to, then you need to remove some of that rubber, like this.

Then you throw it on a flowbench (or take my word for it since I did this step for WOT-Tech)

And see what the flow difference is.

  • Site Downtime while moving hosting site!
    by bszopi
So after way too long, I've finally gotten sick of paying $110/mo to host this site. And what is crazy is, I paid for 3 years up front, got double the cores and double the memory, and it cost me about what 7 months costs on the current host. So it's more cost friendly for me AND it should be just as fast or maybe even faster than we currently have. We shall see.

Now with all that said, now comes the task of transferring the site over. I will most likely work on it at the end of...

  • LZ4 vs LZ9 Connecting Rods
    by SappySE107
Too many resources have shown the rod length to be 5.9" for both motors. We have known for a long time that the 3900 LZ9 rod is 5.827" long from measurements, but the LZ4 was kind of a mystery even now in 2023. Maybe its out there, but most people want to build the bigger motor. However, there is something more to these motors than to think of them like bigger 2.8/3.1 motors. Unlike the 2.8 and 3.1, the difference is the stroke and rod, not stroke and pistons.

    Having both...

  • Saginaw power steering pump - Resealing....
    by davida1_hiwaay_net
Hi folks! Sorry I've been offline for quite some time. Been working overseas and it's been crazy! Anyway I finally got around to fixing the leaking steering pump on my 84 Century. As far as I know the PUMP is original to the 1987 year engine (which i bought as a core engine). For quite some time, it has leaked oil slowly, so that if the car sits for a month or so, all the oil is gone out of the steering pump. So, today I fixed it. I was quoted a high sum of money for a "rebuilt" pump o...
