there MAY have been higher compression pistons used in the 94-up, but i'm not sure on that... i think the 91-93 autos had 9:1 and the 5 speeds had more compression? and then the 94-up had the higher compression pistons even though they were all autos?

My pic stolen from the MAP sensor location thread.

      IIRC, 91-95 autos had 9.0 or 9.1:1 CR, 91-93 5 speeds had 9.25:1, and 96-97 had 9.5:1.

94 started the better emissions/vacuum hose routing system.

91-95 had a digital 3 solenoid EGR, 96-97 went to the linear EGR.

91-93 were batch fire MPFI (no MAF or cam position sensor), 94-97 were SFI and had cam position sensors and MAF.

91-93 with air injection only came on manual cars. IIRC 96-97 were the only autos to have it.

94-97 had no lock rings on the cam gears (making belt changes easier). 94-95 were a square tooth belt where as 96-97 was a round tooth (ran cooler).

96-97 went to the larger intake ports with longer runners with the TB on a detachable tube instead of molded to the UIM. It also had larger exhaust ports (almost a flat oval instead of "D" shaped), and also had clover shaped combustion chambers.

I don't recall what year they went to the low oil sensor on the pan

Also as for the question about what that engine came out of... The LQ1 only got put in a W body from the factory, meaning Lumina, GP, Cutlass, or Monte (Buick went with the 3800 for the Regal).

Additionally, the 94 engine used the CS130-D alternator, and requires changing the plug on a 91-93 harness. It is not possible to use a 91-93 alternator on a 94 engine as the timing cover is different. Also, at least in the case of my 94 engine the knock sensor had a different style plug than the one in my 91 engine though that's easy enough to swap out.
