  • 3.4 rebuild kit for a turbo build...which one?

Well I have an extra LQ1 sitting in my parts car, and I've been kinda thinking about going turbo, so I figure I might wanna rebuild the extra motor I have. I found a few rebuild kits, but I'm wondering which one would be best.

    Master Engine Kits
Include: Pistons, Rings, Gaskets, Cam Bearings, Rod Bearings, Main Bearings, Oil Pump, Freeze Plugs, Camshaft, Lifters, Pre-lube, and Timing Set, and Valley Pan (if applicable). $889

    Overhaul Kits
Include: Pistons, Rings, Gaskets, Cam Bearings, Rod Bearings, Main Bearings, Thrust Washers, Aux Shaft Bearings (if applicable), and Valley Pan (if applicable). $472

Would the "Overhaul" kit be just find for it, or would the extra stuff be absolutely needed? The price difference is quite substantial.

the "master" kit seems to include all of the top end stuff as well. if it doesn't bother you to use old cams/lifters, then cheap out.

i would go for the full kit, but i'm also incredibly paranoid...

We also don't have cam bearings, lol. Those kit parts are just a general description. I agree with Robert. Reusing your cams/lifters are fine. And with the prices I checked at gmpd for just cams, that kit would indeed be a steal if it included cams and lifters (if they were actually comparable to OE). Myself I would go pistons/rings, bearings, gaskets and a timing chain and belt + pullies ect. I would also piece it together myself to get the brands you want. FelPro, Clevite, Dayco, Total Seal, ect.

I don't think it comes with cams, but it might come with lifters.

I highly doubt it comes with 24 bucket lifters. Even stock are expensive to replace. This guy wants $190 and that is a steal! I believe even the one in Ben's store are on par or cheaper than stock price wise IIRC.
