  • 2.8l Celebrity faster than 3.1 GP-Why?

Does anybody know why my friends 2.8l 89 Celebrity, which is falling apart, runs like crap and burns more oil than it does gas, feels so much quicker than my 92 3.1 Grand Prix that runs fine? Is it just a matter of weight or does the 4speed auto vs the 3 speed auto tranny in my GP make the difference?

the 2.8 is rev happy, it'll rev out alot quicker than the 3.1 which could make it feel faster.. i guess.. there is only like 10 HP and 20 TQ difference though...

Weight and the FDR. It holds first longer than your 3.1 will.

Weight is the biggest factor. Celebrities weigh in around 2800lbs whereas the typical '92 Grand Prix weighs 3200-3300lbs.

Yeah 3t40 I think is better matched to the GEN 2 engines. Try it with a 3.1 you'll be rather surprised how well that moves.

The Celeb, being the 4 speed, likely has the 3.33 ratio. If it's a eurosport, it for sure does.

It was optional starting in '84 (AKA 440t4) on the v6 models only.

it's a weight thing your gp has the older 3.1 140hp/185tq compard to the 2.8 125hp/160tq....

                  unless he had a 3.1.
but yea the 3.1mpfi are kinda slow revving compared to the l82.
                  she loves to rev....

wait the checvy has a 4spd...and your gp has a 3 spd??
                  why a 3spd?

and just becuase it feels faster that your car probably is'nt.
like my civic ex feels faster than my pontiac and my friend caprice feels faster...but she was able to dust both of em'

I don't know. When I first got the car I just thought overdrive didn't work. I found out it was a 3 speed when I got the radiator for it.
