  • VTEC just kicked in yo

Midnight Mayhem at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Hopefully I can improve my woeful mid-eighteen time. Going tonight. I don't have a scanner or camera, so I won't be able to post the slip.
Kaiser George IX: 1996 Buick Century Special wagon. 213-SFI. 250k miles. Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down. First documented LX9 swap in an A-body! Click here to read my build thread!

No, and I had less fuel on board. It's very possible now that the engine has lost some power, but I don't see how. It was rebuilt like 40k ago.

What altitude are you running at? My lunina is the same weight if not more, and it started at a 17.5 before swapping for a high flow muffler. My mom had a 90 cleb. Wagon with well over 300,000kms on it and it felt faster than my lumina dose. Do you have a caliper hanging up or a pluged fuel filter or something?

The engine is supposedly a 3.1 MFI. I replaced the fuel filter probably about two years ago, maybe I should do that...

I'm not sure what the altitude is at the track. Maybe 2300'? Las Vegas is around that.

As far as brakes go, I doubt it. Calipers were replaced about a year and a half ago, and the car doesn't sit long enough for them to stick.

                edit:

I don't get why everyone keeps saying my car is heavy. It's maybe 150 lbs heavier than a sedan. According to these two sites, curb weight is 2971 lbs for a '90, and there shouldn't be much difference for an '89. It's not like this is a V6 Caprice.

yeah i guess it's not that heavy.(not as bad as a v6 caprice lol) and i was looking for the lumina weight too and they are 3400+ and the guy on top said he is running faster then you are. is it possible that aerodynamics are playing that big of a factor ??

There's some power loss somewhere. Perhaps compression? Aero might be it, but I've heard of 2.8 sedans running high 16s, and they're identical body-wise aside from the expanded interior. And I don't think the roof rack would account for that much time loss.

no, but it is ugly... might as well yank it off for "better fuel economy"

If you are at 2000+feet I can see that being some of the diference, I am around 6-700ft. What transmission do you have? If you have the 3spd like me leave it in 2nd and wind it out! Do you have a tach in the car at all?

2971 lbs with 100 WHP equates to a 18.04 in a perfect world.

What is the final drive and are you sporting a 3T40 or 4T60? I know the A body didn't get a 3.33 FDR like the lumina.

I have the 4T60, and according to my SPID tag it has the GX3 option. Alldata identifies that as 3.33 final drive.

And with 95 like I have it's 18.35, so I'm basically dead on. Strangely, it says if you have 140 crank hp, a theoretical 16.99 is your time. So I've lost 31% of the original power somewhere. I need to channel Tim Taylor and add MORE POWER!!!!1!!

Speaking of, what differences are there between gen2 and gen 3 engine blocks?

Not from the factory. To my knowledge, only the super rare Eurosport VRs had a tachometer as an option. I've been meaning to get one anyway.
