  • Swap 3400 from 99 GA for LX9 3500 from G6?

My 99 GA is about to die... she needs a new heart!

I've done a little reading... it looks like dropping a LX9 3500 from a G6 into a 1999 Grand Am SE should be a pretty basic swap. The biggest problem would be the throttle bodies, since the G6 has ECT... but it would be possible to wire the throttle right?

Has anyone done a similar swap? Or should I just stick to a 3400 from a 03-05 GA? Or will that create even more problems?

My first engine swap...ugh so confused!

Hey welcome to the site, you should search around a little more and you will find the answers to your questions. You can use the billet TB sold here in the store with the 3500 and still use a cable. Im no expert, but I believe the engine mounts are different from the 3400 as well and Im not sure at all about the sensors.

Mounting.. Should be the same if not very similar

Wiring.. again, very similar, no real changes other than the CTS (more details on that if you want can be found in the 3500 swap sticky). you'll have to run an external crank trigger, there is a very nice one sold in the store here. i have one on my 3500 and it's great.

your old 3x00 exhaust manifolds will bolt right up to it so you won't have to change out anything with your exhaust..

the store here sells a TB adapter that'll allow you to put your stock 3x00 TB on the 3500 plenum.. but the 65MM TB is well worth it.

        Thanks for the speedy replies!

I only notice one sticky in this area...and it has nothing to do with a 3500 motor. I'll need every tidbit of information I can get.

Quick question, is there any major differences between the 99-05 3400 I should be aware of if a later model (maybe 03-04) is dropped into a 99 Grand Am? Was the LIM gasket problem fixed in the 3500?

Just keeping my options open...calling the junk yard tomorrow.

LIM is still plastic in the 3500. And no aftermarket metal gasket offered yet like the 3400's have from felpro.

                3500 FTW!

I can see a full 3500 swap in the Firebird will be the next project Just have to settle with the top end for now.
