  • 3.1 to a 3.4 ??

Hi, im new to the site so i may be asking this in the wrong area sorry if that is the case.
I have 1997 lumina with a 3.1 that snapped the cam shaft. the car has a 196000 miles. I found a 1997 grand am that was smashed in the front (no engine damage) and has 79000miles i can get the car for $600. my question is it has a 3.4 in it can i swap the 3.4 for the 3.1 ? what would i have to change? If it will fit ok i would like to change the trans out with it as well. any help would be great. thanks in advance.

P.S. great site with lots of info

pretty much a direct swap engine wise, if it's the same trans then it should go in easy. You'll enjoy the extra power too, lol

Now, for the computer side of things you could probably get away with leaving all the 3100 stuff in there. Maybe an OBD2 expert will chime in and let you know if just swapping the ECU will work of if there are any changes that need to be made.

I know it's been over three months, and I don't know if the OP was successful or not in their engine transplant, but I just wanted to point out that the 3400 was never offered as an engine choice in 1997 for the Grand Am. If it wound up in there as the result of a swap then I think the OP would have no problems taking it out and putting it in a Lumina.
