  • Interesting revelations with the 2.8

For those that don't know, I got a 2.8 from an '88 Camaro on Saturday that I'll probably use in an eventual StalkerV6 project.

I was preparing it for storage, when I turned the crank a bit and heard something that sounded like dirt scraping cylinder walls. So I figured I'd better take the thing apart and see what's up. Sure enough, #5 cylinder has some not so pretty scoring... tho it doesn't look like anything that a little honing won't clear up. Then I started thinking about what the C/R would be if I put Al heads on it. So I started wiping the piston off to measure the distance from the top of the block to the piston, when I notice some numbers on the pistons. I wipe a little more gunk off, and I'm shocked to find what looks like a non-GM part number and .75 on top of all them. I get out my caliper, and sure 'nuff the bore measures 3.533", or .030" over.

So it looks like I got a 3 cubic inch bonus!
Hey Pat, didn't you say the guy you got it from claimed he put a performance cam in it? I might see if I can measure it and see what it's got.

So right now I'm thinking the next step will be to pull the pistons out, hone the bores and I guess find a set of new rings. I imagine if the walls got scraped, the rings probably did too.

wow i guess it was rebuilt.

all the kid told me is that his dad helped him pull it out and put an aftermarket cam and lifter set in it. maybe they did more than he knew.

What's stock lift? I measured how far each lifter comes up as the cam rotates, it's about .275", which with 1.5:1 rockers would yield .412" lift at the valve... and it measured the same on both intake and exhaust.

        Valve lift .393" / .410" intake/exhaust

right off the 86-91 2.8 rwd specs

              A .030" (.75mm) over 2.8 is a 2.9.

Yeah, might as well. No point in buying pistons if I don't have to.

Yup. I took some measurements then did some figuring using the C/R calculator below, compression would be mid 12's by just slapping a set of Al heads on. Tempting... very tempting.
