  • Question : Intermittent ICM or coil operation?

    Hello.

I'm working on a 1992 Buick Regal with a 3.1. I suspect the problem has to do with the ignition. Sometimes it'll run fine, other times it'll run like a few cylinders aren't firing, and other times it will die while running and refuse to start again until you try it again later.

I tested the fuel pressure during a no-start condition and it was a solid 40psi, so I don't believe its fuel related.

Can faulty coils be intermittent? Or should I be looking more at the ICM? I haven't taken anything apart just yet, so for all I know it could just be a broken wire.

    Thanks for anything!

ICMs going bad aren't too uncommon. Most of the time when a coil goes, it doesn't care if it's hot or cold, but an ICM can be intermittent when heat soaked.
