    So I finally tore down the 3100. I was cleaning the camshaft when I discovered this on the lobe closest to the oil pump drive gear:

    Looks like quality control missed this lobe. I haven't looked at the corresponding lifter yet. It's not a big concern for me since the yard's pulling a 3400 for me right now, but thought I'd share.

    That's from wear. I see it all the time on roller cams in diesel engines.

    Don't ask me why the metal flakes- I don't know. I just know that it does.
