  • Bolt-ons?

I'm trying to find out what bolt-ons can be done to the 3.4 in my dd to get it going a little better. I know the obvious cai, headers and exhaust but I'm wanting to find out what throttle bodies work best, what rockers I can use, and what intake manifold to get(ported sportsman or comp series)? So fill me in guru's.

First off, welcome to the site.

I take it we are talking about the Grand Am in your sig, in which case, you are asking about a 3400. There are 3 different 3.4L engines, so you need to clarify. Also, what are you goals? What kind of budget? Don't want to throw a whole bunch of ideas out without a little more info.

It's a 3400 fwd ohv motor non-vvt. My goal is 13.9's even if i have to use nitrous to get there. Budget is whatever i can spend on it month to month. I would prefer to get it as low as i can n/a as possible before i use any fi. Do you happen to know if maf housing ends from an lt1 will fit?

Here is probably the best bang for the buck, limiting it to just bolt-ons: http://wot-tech.com/shop/gm-60v6/350.../prod_297.html

I'd also recommend HP Tuners, as even just basic tuning can often net power gains on even stock engines. To further answer your previous questions from above...

          1. For throttle bodies, there is really only a couple of choices, either a billet TB from WOT-Tech (http://wot-tech.com/shop/gm-60v6/65m...y/prod_24.html), or a TB from a 3.5L Intrigue, which will require an adapter plate in order to bolt to the manifold (http://wot-tech.com/shop/gm-60v6/lx5.../prod_141.html).
          2. For rockers, unfortunately there really aren't any improvements over stock. There are some full roller rockers (Crane Gold series) that can bolt on, but they are the same ratio as stock, so gain will be minimal and not worth the price for what you are trying to accomplish.
          3. See above for manifold suggestions.
          4. As far as the MAF goes, I am almost positive they are compatible, but the question would be, why? In an NA setup, you are never going to outflow the stock MAF, and its not really a restriction in the airway, so again, it really isn't a needed upgrade.

I mentioned it before, but failed to give a link to HP Tuners, so here you go: http://wot-tech.com/shop/gm-60v6/hpt.../prod_226.html

The reason i said the maf housing is because my brother has one just laying around that is descreened an ported that he said i could just have. That kinda sucks about the rockers as i don't want to do a cam right now. How big is the intrigue tb? Thanks alot for the links.

Ok thanks. Are there things like underdrive pullies and urathane motor mounts? I noticed wot's site says they're discontiued.

How would the sportsman upper/lower combo and a 65mm tb do? I'm assuming that this car should run somewhere in the 15.6-16.0 area right?

There arent to many hard number out there with people that do things step by step. how ever doing the TB, upper and lower intake, tune (even a basic tune) which will involve you getting a wide band O2 and gauge, will net a good reasult, the heads do have restrictions, so i'm going to throw it out there and say get a ported set aswell, but thats your buget.
And with out question, a underdrive pully is a bad idea for too many reasons. That is why they are no longer avalible.
Anything else aside the above mentioned and what you noted, you would be pulling the motor, or/and building a second one on the side and swap them on a long weekend. cam and timing chain upgrade would greatly complement the top end and fuel economy. Go that far and you should be pretty happy.

I just put my motor build together and realistically it would have been easier to buy all the ported goodies from wottech assemabled and ready to go. Just incase you were thinking of buying a die grinder and porting kit. Its not un-do-able, and they did turn out nice, but it wasnt exactly the cost effective and time effective way to go about it. But i plan on doing much more port work in the future.

LT1 maf housing ends will not fit your stock maf center section. They are a different diameter. Also you don't want to use one that has been ported or had the screen removed. They are very precisely calibrated sensors and if you do anything that changes the flow without corresponding tuning in the computer you will throw off your tuning, usually for the worse! The screen is there to keep the air straight and make the sensor read correctly. It is not much of a flow restriction so it's best to leave it alone. In NA form you won't come anywhere close to maxing out the signal on the stock MAF anyway, so it will not be a restriction. If you get a tuner you can change the MAF table in the computer and swap in a larger LS1 MAF, but you don't really need it unless running boost.

As for the other things, as stated there isn't really any power to be gained changing the rockers to whats available. Not worth it for the amount of work and cost, so it's best to stick with stock. I speak from experience, I've tried two different sets. Throttle body, there are two sizes from WOT-tech, or the intrigue unit. Underdrive pullies... not worth it, not recommended, and not available. Urethane mounts... there are a few available and they are good mods. You can make your own cheap though with some urethane casting compound. Depends on how handy you are and how much work you want to do, and if you can let the car sit overnight while they cure out of the car. It's basically up to you.

CAI, exhaust, headers are best place to start IMO. Headers especially, but there are only two you can get right now. One really expensive set, and one really cheap/crappy set. Unless you can find some used TOG's or S&S headers that is. Same for exhaust. There is Borla (expensive), pacesetter (crap), or you can go custom. I'd go custom. Same with the CAI. The offerings for these cars has really dropped in the last few years as far as off the shelf bolt on items.

Stock I would expect you to do mid 15's to low 16's. SE's have a slightly higher final drive which doesn't help unless you've got a ton of power. With some decent mods, tuning, and good driving low 14's should be easily attainable.

oh yeah, you could change your final drive, not exactly easy though, but its a bolt on.

Oh sure. I'd definitely use a kit with some type of controller or modifier to up the fuel pressure though and I wouldn't use a really big dry shot. You'd probably be better off with a single fogger wet kit. I had a 35-75hp wet kit on mine for a while and it wasn't hard to install.
