  • Possible Server Downtime Tonight

Starting around 10pm tonight (4/3/14), we are moving to a different server on the same host. Basically, after looking at the server we were on, and analyzing our usage over the past couple of months, it was determined that we really have an abundance of resources not being utilized. Needless to say, to help reduce site costs (~$45/mo), I am decided to "downgrade" the server. We'll see how much of a downgrade it actually is, though. We are moving to a 100% SSD server, so there is a chance that we may actually see a boost in performance. Either way, I doubt we will see much decrease in performance.

Our host is scheduled to begin the transfer around 10pm. From what I am told, near the end of the transfer is when there will be some actual downtime. I don't know when the "end" actually will be, but it will be some time after 10pm and before 6am tomorrow morning. Average downtime is said to be around 30 min, but could be as much as a couple of hours.

Anyway, wanted to give at least a couple of hours notice. And for those that don't read this thread, and try to access the site during the downtime, when you do come back up and do find this thread, now you know the reason for the downtime.

Really thought you were going to say something like, "Haha sucker, that's what you get for not reading this section!"

And if the site loses all its data, you will never read this

Looks like there may have been a few hiccups in the switch, but the site is back up and running. There are still a few things to do on the back end, but it shouldn't affect the site much.

Seems nice and quick to me this morning. Obviously it's not peak time, but it does feel snappier, even though you reduced your specs. Perhaps there's something to be said for them thar new fangled SSDs after all...

I know my computer here at work, which is running a 180GB SSD as its only drive, boots up and accesses local files very quickly. Hopefully it works out just as well on the server.

I am trying it right now, by requesting the desktop site, as I don't have a mobile theme set up. So far it seems to be working fine...

There wasn't a delay. It did pop up the question about wanting to leave the page or not, but after clicking on Leave Page, it reloaded without a delay.
