I thought that temp sensor in the head went into the head itself, not the coolant stream? Oh well, no big deal really.

The one in the lower intake manifold is the one that the ECM uses for the coolant temp. The one in the head is the one that the dash guage uses, like 5speedz34 said. You could do without hooking the one in the head up, but the ECM will be very cranky if you don't hook the one in the lower intake up. Fans will stay on, car will idle like crap, and the SES light will stay on because the ECM doesn't know what the coolant temp is, and is taking precautions to make sure the engine doesn't overheat. Fans are obvious, but the crappy idle is from it dumping fuel IIRC, because a rich charge burns cooler then a lean charge burns. It was in all the DOHC's I've worked on and my 94'. The cam carriers are different lengths though, the front one to be exact is longer.
