  • 93 DOHC Cuttlass stalled, won't restart

I was backing out of a tight spot and hit the driver fender in front of the wheel well. I noticed a little smoke coming out of the wheel well area, as i continued backing out and to the left, but it just recently rained and figured it was burn off. Probably not related, but thought I'd mention it.
Drove about a mile down the road, car just stalled (like it wasn't getting gas (it is full)), and would not restart. I did not have any prior indications of problems before this.
I checked for spark (none), I changed the crankshaft sensor and then I was getting spark, but no start. Changed the plugs and plug wires for good measure. No start.
Fuel pump kicks on, and fuel pressure is apparent (but not guage tested) at the valve on the rail. Changed the fuel filter. Checked all fuses, and breakers with a grounded power light.
I will change the coil and module tonight - but anybody have any other ideas?

Sounds electrical. You're on the right track checking the coil/module. If that doesn't work, get back to us...
Okay now, that's enough of that.

Isn't the ECM in teh W cars up there somewhere? Or is it on the other side?

            Hi All,
I changed the ingnition module and coils - Still nothing. I have 3 different ECM's - All Good - Swapped and still the same symptoms.
Timing belt appears visually ok, so I don't suspect it - Can the timing belt slipping cause the car to just stall with no prior indications? It's about time to change it, but I don't want to change it until the car actually starts again - Unless it IS the problem of course.
I'm still thinking electrical - Maybe it is a combination of several things? Can a malfunctioning Engine Temperature sensor or knock sensor cause this on the LQ1?
I'm still working on it - Any thoughts?
What happend to all the 60 degree member web pages? Recently my account was deactivated, and I had to sign up again with the same name - Fortunately there wasn't too much on my web page yet - but I have quite a bit to put on there now.

Man do I love my car when it runs - but it seems to be down more often then not.....

You said you have spark now, but you still havent said if you tested fuel pressure with a gauge? Your car will still start even without an ect or knock sensor, I never said it would run, but it will start. Also if you have fuel pressure you may want to throw a noid light on the front injectors just to see if the harness it ok.

                Hi Homer & all,
I'll get a fuel pressure guage this weekend and test it.
                What is a noid light?
I also have a spare 95 engine (My car is 93), I noticed the fuel rail was slightly different - Is it swappable? If I remember correctly the injection timing is different with the 95's, but since the PROM controls the injectors, can I just use the 95 rail?
I keep a garage full of spare parts for this car - A few months back I tried going to the GM dealer to buy the fuel lines at the pressure regulator and they do not carry them anymore (Even for a 95-96). Now it seems everytime I go to the junk yard, I pick something up from there just so I have more parts.

                Thanks,
                Dennis

So just to confirm, it is cranking over, you're getting spark, you've checked all of the fuses, it's getting fuel (at least as far as you can tell by listening to the fuel pump), but it's not starting? Have you taken off the front belt cover just to make sure there was one there? This really sounds odd...
Okay now, that's enough of that.

                    Hi Ryan,
Actually that is all I did with the timing belt, and I did see the belt and it was firm. My neighbor said it could still be broke - but I shook that notion off and put the front cover back on. Should I go back and check this? I've never had one break off on me - I've changed it twice in 100K and it has been about 30k ago since it was changed last. Could the timing belt breaking cause symptoms like this? If you don't remember - driving the car and it just stopped like it was out of gas and would not restart. It was getting no spark until I changed the crankshaft sensor - Could I have possibly have been given the wrong sensor?

                      Hi All,
Looks like I had a 2 fold problem. One was elctrical, and once I changed the crank sensor I was able to get spark, but something else was wrong.
Grandprixgtp_91 and Homer - Right ON! It was the belt. It's teeth were stripped at crankshaft. I have to set the timing yet, but I'll post another thread to ask about the timing belt.

                      Thanks to all who helped!!!

i think you should check that timing belt again. you can just pull the cover off again and have somebody crank the engine. just watch the belt and see if if moves when it's cranked.

Thanks MBTECH, I started a new thread on the timing belt in October and had it solved by the weekend. I appreciate the response however.
