I think I got $2500 for the 91 way back when that girl slammed into the back of it. All I can say is WOW! and I'm glad no one got hurt as well. That really sucks man.

When the pink car got rear ended (is that a double entendre?) The insurance company gave mom $2000 for it, and I was able to buy the car back from them for only $200.00

We had STATE FARM on it, and full coverage. Not sure why mom wanted full coverage on a 1996 Grand Prix SE sedan, but it WAS in excellent condition. I bought the car back because it had a really strong running 3100 SFI that I had done the LG8 swap too. I used the parts from that car for the OBD2 conversion for my 1988 Cutlass Supreme.

SOMETIMES the insurance company will suprise you, but most of the time, they are just rip-off artists.

Unfort, I only own 2 extra steelies, so I wouldn't be able to just swap them out and save the wheels. The TB is pretty burned, although it might be salvagable. But considering it was a hack job (literally... I had to hack the original 3.1 TB all up to make it fit the 3100), I just don't see it really being worth the hassle for someone else. You never know though. But I doubt I will take anything off the car. Just let the insurance come and haul it off as it sits. And hope that I can get at least $1000 for it, although I think that might be a stretch.

Noooo! FWIW I've seen gen2's burned up too in the yards. It could be power steering lines bursting etc, mice, etc.

Are you going to save the wheels? What about the billet TB? Is it melted or can you take it off and have new bearings put in it?

As odd as it may be... I have seen a few cars with the 3100/3400 in the bone yard burnt to all hell. Could there be a relation to all this? Something simple?
Times like this I am glad to have the old school 660 mpfi style engine.

That sucks, I have seen my share of engine fires....as I used to by cars with light engine fires to fix and either sell or drive.

I have seen a 96 caddy with 30,000 miles that a mouse chewed a fuel line and a 97 2.4L cavalier that had a rod break through the block and ignite the oil that was spewing out on the exhaust manifold. I have also see a few that started from ruptured power steering lines.

I might know what the cause is, but I can't say for sure. The fire chief said it looked electrical and from around the battery area. But, I think one of the PS lines has been leaking for the last couple of days, as I would get small puffs of smoke at stop lights right after I had turned the wheel. I checked the PS fluid the other day, and it was a little low. I was planning on replacing them next weekend (this one was already booked), but I guess that won't happen now. But, I can't say for sure that is the cause. It could be something completely different. With the extent of the burns, I don't think they will ever really know what caused it. I just don't see the insurance company taking the time to investigate it that deeply. They'll just cut me a crappy check and tow it off.

damn secret L67 swap. the car thieves dont steal your car anymore they swap L67's in them. its just a matter of time.

I think someone swapped in an L67 while I wasn't looking... Anyway, here are some pics of my car from this afternoon. Probably be the last ones I post.









My wife had just driven home from work and parked the car. We were talking in the living room when she said the car was smoking pretty bad. Looked out and smoke was pouring from under the hood. So I grabbed a fire extinguisher and she called 911. I didn't want to open the hood (latch is broken, so have to reach under the bumper to do it anyway) to help feed the fire, so I just tried to shoot the extiguisher under the hood. Didn't really work. It took the fire deptartment ~5 min to get here, and by that time, flames were shooting from all over the place. It took them 5-10 minutes to get it all out, and they couldn't get the hood open, so they just punctured the hood a couple times.

Car is definately totaled. I don't ned the insurance company to tell me that. There really isn't much left in the engine bay, and basically nothing in there is salvagable. So sorry, I won't be selling any of the parts. Most of the plastic under the dash is melted as well.

So anyway, as if our last month hasn't been bad enough, now this. I am thankful that it happened when it was parked, and not while my wife (or myself) was driving it. And especially if either of the girls were inside. So, now I'm starting to search for a new vehicle. I'm hoping for a 60V6, but just depends on what I can find and the price. Not really wanting to spend much, and I sure as hell ain't going to get much of a check from the insurance for this thing. Oh well... Its been a good 14 years. Guess it's finally time to let go and move on.
