well raw material isn't that expensive compared to buying a kit, but time is money

Oh yeah that I'll agree with. Chromoly is not something you should be doing with a MIG

You re correct, Jon, NHRA rules state that if the cage is mild steel, then MIG is allowed (no grinding if welds permitted), if the cage is constructed from chromoly it must be TIG...
"All 4130 chromoly tube welding must be done by approved TIG heliarc process; mild steel welding must be done by approved MIG wire feed or approved TIG heliarc process. Welding must be free of slag and porosity. Any grinding of welds prohibited."

I agree. Asuming the base metals and filler metals are the same there is no reason a TIG weld will be stronger than a MIG weld

Also if thats the case, why would they put this info on Millers website saying Harvick Inc TIG's some items, but they MIG weld all their own roll cages...
Unless of course you were referring to drag racing... That I may agree with because I know my cousin when he made his truck, that whole cage he TIG welded, including gussets he was adding later to go into the 8's, BUT I do remember him saying he uses the TIG because there is no spatter and it looks good... Nothing along the lines of it being illegal. And the cage itself has a paint job thats nicer than my car. lolLast edited by 3400-95-Modified; 03-08-2010, 09:16 AM.

There is nothing wrong with self shielding flux core. A proper weld will look just like a MIG bead profile.
What size wire are you using? Don't try and use a big wire to weld thin steel. It wont work out good. But if you have to just use a much lower wire speed.
Flux core does need much different settings than MIG however. Voltage needs to be much lower than you would typically use with MIG and your wire sickout from the contact tip needs to be a MINIMUM of 1/2" when you move up to higher settings you need to use 1" of sickout. Flux core needs more manipulation of the puddle to make the weld sit flat to use a weave left to right when traveling. Always drag flux core wire. NEVER push unless it is an all position wire including vertical down. If it is suitable for vertical down welding then you can push the wire.
Once you find a setting that wont burn through then make slight corrections in the voltage and wire speed to adjust for minimum spatter. Spatter spray goes a long way in reducing cleanup time.
Yes you can weld stainless to mild steel or weld steel with stainless wire or the other way around. However you will loose all corrosion resistance in and around the weld zone.

As for it being illegal to give your car a golf ball look, that's stupid if it is true. If rice boys can put fart pipes and picnic tables on their cars after they cut the springs and spray paint it some funny color, why can't people put a golf ball texture on their car for economy?
Should be legal on teh civilian street. If one can have a hotdog car, why not golfballed, lol.
Though, some laws are stupid. Like on a country road with no street lights, it is a law you have to stop every mile and fire a flare at night to scare the animals off the road.
Or like it is illegal to sleep on your refridgerator on your front yard. But the washer is ok, lol. These are PA laws.

I saw Mythbusters about putting golf ball texture over a cars hood to improve aerodynamics.
From what they aired, it was illegal to make your car textured like a golf ball.
Is that true?
I did replicate the golf ball texture in my TB at just the right place where the air has to turn into the smallest section (the plate area) to reduce turbulant areas. I did a shop vac test with a foam ball adjusted with fishing weights in a tube. I didn't gain much but it did help a little. I can't give figures as I was only able to mark my progress lines. It pushed the foam ball up another inch or so. Hard to measure exactly cause the ball never stayed in one place, it bounced around but the bouncing was about an inch higher, roughly. So the texture DID do something worth while.
I'll dig around and see if I can find the pics from the experiment. It was a neat DIY flow test. Though, I wouldn't trust it for cylinder head porting.
For those who have seen the pics of my TB, I put A LOT of thought and work into it. More for fun instead of buying a 65mm which I polan to do with the 3400 Top Swap coming up.

But I still would have sprung for the extra money to just get a gas shielded 110 over the flux core, if you think the 220 is more power than you'll ever need.

It's better than the piece I have now, but at least it works... :/

Yeah, I really want a nice Miller, but Hobart (owned by Miller) seems to be more in my price range for features I want. I still have yet to read a bad review on the Handler 140, so that's a good thingGood thing for me, when I finally get the $$$ for it, Tractor Supply is like 25 minutes from me.
