Lorenzo (gpse3400) can give you more insight on what to do with this trans, as my only experience with them is blowing them up, and swapping a 5 speed in place of one.

pocketrocket, i had tried what you said and when i tapped the brake pedal while on the gas it stopped, but it almost seems like its shifting back down sometimes when i do that? it would stop for a second or two and when i let my foot off the brake it would shake again. so would it be the tcc soleniod then? and also is this external or internal? i have no experience with auto transmissions at all ive only dealt with manuals. also wheres it located? thanks.

Despite what Sharkey said, when my 91 did it, it was for sure a TCC solenoid in the transmission. Next time it does it, without letting off the gas, tap the brakes so the brake lights come on and see if it stops. If it does, then the TCC solenoid is at fault. Reason being, you leave the load on the engine by keeping on the gas, but when you push on the brakes, the ECM disengages the TCC.

Odd though, all cases of the OD stutter that I remember reading about were due to ignition problems. Acceleration being smooth throws me for a loop as to what else it could be.
Not sure on the unplugged red connector, I'm not familiar with the wiring on the newer cars.
As said, there's a possibility it could be fuel related.. maybe a clogged filter or a dying pump or injector. I'm still leaning away from any sort of lock-up problem, though having the TCC solenoid go bad isn't exactly unheard of.
I'd try fuel filter, if it hasn't been done recently, then maybe checking fuel pressure. Should be able to rent a tester at Autozone, I don't know for sure if they have them though.
