I ended up putting two resonators on my car to quiet it down. I have dual Dynomax ultra-flo ss on mine with 2.5" piping and a high flow cat. Its still loud at idle and in the upper rpm range. But just cruising down the road, you barely hear anything.

no video yet..put it on last month to get a sticker since a lot of places told me to basically go f myself with that on..

i also have a 4" round magnaflow muffler where the resonator would go. not sure if it really does anything since it's a straight through design. i'll see if i can get one next saturday if work doesn't decide to crap on my saturday.. i think i have videos of the edelbrock in my car thread on here. i was a half mile away from the camera and you could still hear the car. lol normally i just run it with the cutout bolted on and what ever muffler i have in the back.

i got the stock manifolds on now since i took the headers off to v-band them and i needed something on to get a sticker..doesn't seem like the manifold made much of a difference with the loudness but they raped my top end.

the quiet flow isn't bad and since you don't have a cam like i do it should be quieter than mine. no matter what muffler i put on this thing it always ends up being loud..lol

it's actually not bad at idle and sounds decent when you get on it.

Repost, but here is "before" with no resonator:

Then "after," adding a Borla XR1 in the resonator spot:

Here's how it sounds after driving over 30 miles on a warm day, hot start. Sorry about the wind noise, but I wanted the sound out in an open space. So, for the record, we have TOG headers > custom downpipe by Hanksville in CO > 3" Magnaflow CAT > 3x5x15 Borla XR1 round case > Magnaflow 14828 3" oval muffler/tip. That's about as straight-thru as it gets with a full exhaust. Louder with a cold start.

What it sounds like to people outside the car and/or from a good distance away is always a tough thing to record.

No resonator now, but I'm not opposed to using one. Is a louder muffler w/ resonator a better tone than a quieter muffler without resonator? I don't have a ton of room with a cutout, converter & muffler under it already.

I forgot to mention, cackle & pop only seems to be in DFCO. With both of my EFI sticks.

I called Magnaflow and they recommended a 11256...regular straight through with 18" case, not a 3 chamber turbo with packing like the XL. I called Dynomax and they said anything straight through would give the cackle and recommended a Super Turbo...but said the ST would sound just like my VT at idle/light throttle with the valve closed.

The super turbo will really quiet down the resonance and still flows pretty well, pretty similar design to the old Thrush (but better). They're also similar to the Walker Quiet flow (IRIC they are all actually made by Walker now).

A chambered muffler is always going to resonate more sound out of the case itself by design, flowmaster being the worst of the common ones, Aerochamber being the best.

To get rid of the cackle/pop on decel (which i'm surprised is an issue since you have a cat) you can try a resonator or even better a large bore glasspack mid way between the cat and muffler. A Hushpower might work too if you have room.

do you have a resonator anywhere in there?

EDIT: it seems i am not alone.

If you want super quiet with a nice deep tone without the raspies AND can manage to tuck this up in there: http://www.autopartsnetwork.com/235-...S4XWh2lROFy_0d
Thats my suggestion. Otherwise, you're going to need to do some creativeness with resonators<< to rid of the rasp/cackles while keeping a rumble tone.

started a topic Mellow muffler choice

    Mellow muffler choice

Been through a few mufflers on my daily driver 3400 Beretta and just not feeling it. I had a Borla when the car was auto and loved it...really loud but I was a youngin. 5spd swap made it even louder and the fart cackle & pop on decel drove me nuts. Threw on a free Flowmaster 40 from a friend and hated it. Put on a Dynomax VT and it cut down on a lot of the cackle & pop, but still does it some and has a fluttering sound on decel that is unattractive. And it's too quiet...I want a little v6 note to be audible, just not super loud. And the main thing I want to eliminate is the cackle & pop on decel. I hate that sound on a v6.

I've come up with a few ideas that might be good. Wondering if anyone here has used one of these mufflers and what they think.

An 18" Magnaflow XL might help with the extra case length and 3 chamber turbo design. I put one on my 350 truck and it was pretty quiet but got quite a bit louder with some miles. And it lets the occasional cackle & pop out on decel too.

Dynomax makes a 20" Super Turbo that seems like it might be decent. Good sized muffler to get rid of unwanted noise, but still look free flowing enough to be ok.

And call me crazy, but a Walker "Quiet Flow" is about the same size as the Super Turbo, but probably a little quieter. Although I have heard some exhaust videos on youtube with OEM mufflers on v6s with a resonator delete that sound pretty good. I think that's basically what I would have with this setup.

And for the record...I have S&S headers with full 2.5" mandrel piping and a cutout before my Catco converter. So even a muffler that doesn't flow a ton won't hurt me at the drags.
Working...
