  • Need a multimeter looking for suggestions

Kinda of leaning toward this one http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...er=431988_0_0_

Seems like it does more just not sure how useful it could be be.

Would this work for just basic?

That would be a perfectly fine meter to pick up.

Whatever meter you choose, if you are going to check computer related circuits, please make sure it is at least 10 meg-ohm impedance. Diode test feature is handy as well. Personally I use a Fluke 88, but I realize that it's not in the hobbyist's budget.

If you ain't rock and roll, you must be driving a Honda

No, but Flukes are really really nice meters. I picked one up at Harbor Freight (not a Fluke, obviously) for about $25. It's got a rubber jacket, tilt LCD panel, reads frequencies and does the transistor function. I've had it for a while now and it's worked great so far- one of my best Harbor Freight purchases.

Expensive, but I've seen one of these in action, well worth the money:

Can you imagine a friend knocking it over causeing the display to separate? "Dude, look what you did to my $260 meter!" Then after he is sufficiently freaked out break the news to him, lol.

For just your own usage, something from autozone would be perfect.
Not a big need to part with a lot of money unless it is something you will use everyday like at a job.

Multimeters come in REAL handy for a lot of things. Mine is some fairly simple one I got at sears, had it for years, and is a vidal part of my tool chest.

The 10 mega-ohm impedance reference - you may not know what that means but long story short - it is good advice.

Hey one thing also - one really nice feature of some multimeters is they have automatic range sensors for resistance and voltage. This is nice when you have little or no clue what the resistance or voltage is going to be.

Here is mine specifically, while it doesn't measure engine performance, it does work well for anything else.

Craftsman actually makes a pretty good cheap meter.

Personally I use a fluke also but being an electrician I prolly use it in more detail. I did pick up a NIB fluke 177 on ebay for only $50 shipped.

If you can find a good deal on a Fluke then go for it, otherwise the one you linked to will be fine.

I use a Fluke 87 at home and an 88 here at work, also a benchtop model with a few accessories. They've always been great.

I used to have a Fluke 87, but ever since we moved, I haven't been able to find it...
