Good price on a new engine and install

Hey just wondering what a good price would be to install a new crate motor without the uim or lim into a 93 z? i might be getting one this weekend for around 7~800 dollars and a local garage told me 850 to install. Thanks.

Also I am buying this engine from a guy who says it is a new crate motor. What should I be looking for in order to make sure that it is new and not just pick and pull type thing. Thanks.

How clean it is will help tell you. If it is a crate engine without the lower intake, look in the ports and make sure they are clean. These engine's get a blackish-brownish film in the ports when they are run. You could also look in the exhaust ports for carbon to see if it has been run.

you can also take off the cam covers and make sure that there is a whole bunch of prelube there! if it is a crate motor gm puts ass loads of prelube in the thing. it just looks like grease (new grease). also the cylinder heads will be machined really shiny on the sides. there is a bunch of things to look for, i mean it will be the most clean you have ever seen a motor thats for sure.

And there will be a serial number you can check. That's what I would do. I can make any engine look crate, those numbers don't lie.

dont be so sure, my brother had his motor rebuilt and they sandblast the whole thing and paint it and everything, and it still didnt look as good as my new crate motor. lets put it this way, if its a shop selling you the motor for that cheap its not a crate motor.

So went to take a look at it. WOW This thing was absolutely immaculate. I had him take off the valve cover and everything was all shiny and new looking. $800 dollars to have it delivered to the shop that's putting it in and I will have a new car in about a week! And then I might even try and rebuild the old one to put into a fiero or something! I am way too excited over a piece of metal! He said that his school had motors donated by GM and that he bought it thinking that he was going to make a project out of it but ran out of time because he is going to college in the fall.

P.S. How or where do I check the serial number at? I have the number off of the crate. I just need to know where to go to check to see what year engine this is I guess.
