power steering pump

Have a 94 z auto, 70,000 miles, p/s pump went south, replaced with new from autozone (probably the first mistake), have more pump wine than old one! Autozone said a week for break in of pump. Also, changed cam belt 10,000 ago, only belt, tensioner was fine for oil level, sprocket lock downs were within torque spec., all pullies felt good as well, after 10,000 I now have about 1/8 inch of belt wear on outside of belt, (farthest edge from engine), car is still running strong, everything in time, any suggestions as to why the wine or belt wear greatly appreciated.

Pfft!! I bought a new power steering pump from AutoZone too. I believe it was an Ansco pump or something. Its whining worse than the one that went south on me. I believe my rack is gone, but thats off topic. Have you bleed the pump, to get the air out. With car running, cut the wheel all the way left, then all the way right. And repeat 4x. Dont know if you did this already, but figured it mite help.

ALSO .. Maybe one of the power steering lines is cracked or something, because I believe power steering fluid eats away at the belt(s) ..

i've done a few gm pumps, the last one took 40 minutes to bleed all the air out, thats with turning the steering wheel every which direction and driving the car around the block a few times. Eventually I gave the car to the customer with a slight whine that went away after a day. just get all the air out the SLIGHT whine goes away after the pump internals gets douched with fluid.

I'm on AZ pump #5 now. They refuse to refund my money so I am keeping it up. My experience is that if it whines when you put it in, it will more then likely whine just as much a week later.

For the belt wear, you sure you pressed the pulley all the way on?

This is the second p/s pump from autozone, which same as the first I've bleed the livin fuck out of. I'm thinking about trying napa or carquest. Used water pumps from autozone before never had a problem, but first p/s pump from their. My pump is ansco as well, I have done the steering rotations stop to stop over and over too. The pump did seem quiter today though. Cold start is loudest as to be expected, and once hot it only wines after coming down off a slight rev, and will off and on while up to speed. Too brian89gp my belt wear issue is the cam belt, so if you any ideas about that, that'd be great. Thanks for the insight guys!

I've used the AZ Power steering pums with no issues at all... it whined when i first started it up, but after a little driving it was fine..

i also have a AZ powerstering pump that i put on about 6 months ago and... how great is this it came apart on me anout 20 minets ago... i just got back to school form home.... the berings went out just as i was getting off of the exit

i had a new one on my car when i sold it and it whined just like a m90. it was loud and would increase with revs

Do you guys know your suppose to be bleading the air out w/ the wheels off the ground? Are you also checking to see how much play the shaft has before your installing them?
Also those "NEW" Pumps your buying are rebuilds. The only new pumps you can buy are directly from AC Delco and going to cost you upwards of $200-$300.

About your belt problem. One of your idler pulleys is sitting off axis or is some how to far in. Maybe you put one in the opposite way (if there is a difference). Or maybe one was is loose. Possibly when you put an idler back in you cross threaded it, doing this would cause it to tighten up before it was all the way against the cover. The only thing that will wear a belt like that is if it is touching something, or an idler is out of whack. Maybe take off the serpentine belt then the lower timing belt cover. Then take a strait edge and compare the different idlers/tensioners reference there angle and distance from each other. If one is not square or is further in compared to the rest, it's your culprit.

Thanks Lyle, that's what I had been wondering. I have never had any of the pulleys off myself. When I changed my belt I was able to leave everything on, dont ask me how . When I do the belt again here in a while I'm going to change idlers tensior and ten. pulley as a precaution. Anyone know a good place to get all that shit. Thanks again guys

If you never had them off, it's got to be your tensioner pulley then. I'd check that first. The only other possibility could be a bad bearing on an idler. As far as parts, I don't know. When I worked for Optimax GM was the only place that had them. But i think some guy on here know some aftermarket places.
