  • water pump - wtf?

i had a grinding noise that i traced to the water pump. sure enough i removed it and 2 of the fins on the impeller showed signs of rubbing on the housing for the pump(on the timing cover)

i put my new one in and still i have the same grinding noise, so i removed it and again some of the fins look like they are rubbing the housing.

what could cause this? it didnt always make the noise either.

That sounds fuct up. Anything strange happen before the noise? Like overheating or anything? Was it the back of the impeller, or around the outside that was rubbing? Did you check to see if there was anything stuck in the housing that the impeller was rubbing on? I just changed the water pump on the 91 because it was leaking pretty good, not just weeping from the weep holes. I can't complain, it had 152k on it, and the only thing with it really was the seals mostly, I could barely feel any slop in the bearings at all, and it wasn't rubbing on anything.

EDIT: BTW, 'Tis the season for water pumps. I did another one on a friends car at the beginning of this last week.

it was on the blades on the back of the impeller. never overheated, nothing looked odd in the housing either. i'm stumped, only thing i can think of is pop it off and take the grinder to the ones that were rubbing and knock them down a little

It sounds really strange that a new one did it too. I wouldn't see why knocking them down would hurt. I would be worried if it does it again, and keep an eye on your coolant level for a while just in case though.

I dont know since these have an auto tensioner, but I had a 2.5 once that did that because I overtensioned the belt, but I doubt it in this case.

Was it maybe the gasket? Did you use one when you installed the new one? Take a look inside the housing. May be the old pump kind of mushroomed the edges in there, so now the new one rubs too. Just a thought. I wouldn't recommend hammering down the edges of the impeller either. Also was the pump new or rebuilt, cause it might just be a poorly assembled one.
