  • bracket question

there is a bracket that goes from the rear of the a/c compressor to the block. some1 must have cross threaded the bolt that connects to the compressor cause when i went to re-install it i noticed the material on the bolt and when i tried to put it on it wouldn't tighten.

how vital is this bracket? my guess is that it is used to maybe stabilize the compressor? my compressor just freewheels so there is not much resistence, do u guys think i can get away with leaving this bracket off?

My dad worked at a Chevy dealer for about 12 years, and he has had the best advice ever given to me.

If GM spent the money to put something on a car, it should stay on.

This is the truth-GM will save money any way possible, and $2 in brackets will save thousands with every car.

But I do believe there are some things that do not belong-like subframes

At least you realized how hipocritical your post was Aaron.

I don't know how much that bracket will matter with the AC off, but once the AC is engaged I bet that there is a lot of pressure on the unit.

the $2 bracket isn't the prob, it's the fact that the threads are stripped on the back of the a/c compressor where the bracket bolts to.

that is what i was thinking that it was meant to stabilize it during use. but if it just freewheels like it does it might be ok.

anywho i am way too lazy to helicoil it, perhaps i will just weld the bracket to it

At least it will still be there, and you won't have to worry about the bolt vibrating out, lol.

i have some good news, no i didn't save a bunch of $$ on my car insurance by switching to geico.

i used a different bolt about 3/8 in longer and it grabbed a few threads and i am still going to weld it.

from what i heard my car will do some serious shaking soon cause i am trying the 13* mod to see for myself.

Weld? WTF? That shit will crack like no body's business. Especially if you have excessive vibration.

I don't remember if any one with an auto has done it (IIRC, you have an auto). Do you have a stock dogbone, or a poly one? The stock will let you feel some vibration (more so if you have an auto), but not as much as a poly. It's not a shake like your running on 4 cylinders or so, but more of a lope, like in a built v8 with a nice cam, but not so extreme. It almost sounds like a fouled plug the way it lopes. But yet, it will translate into a shake in the body, but not a huge one.
