  • Power Steering Pump Leak

last summer I ran into some problems with my power steering pump. I wont go into details as to how it happened, but the bottom of the reservior now has a hole in it about the size of a quarter, does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to cover the hole and still be able to fit the pump back into it's bracket? I've tried this product called JB-Weld, it held up good all summer long, but as I stored the car over the winter, the JB-Weld cracked, and after trying to put a new coat on, I noticed that it doesn't fit into the bracket properly because of the build up caused by the JB-Weld. I don't know if a fiberglass patching will stick to the container, or if an epoxie would do the job. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it would save me from stripping the power steering and leaving myself with manual steering.

Sounds like the problem is that the JB Weld and the plastic reserve tank expand and contract at different rates. When the cold weather came thats prolly what caused the crack. I've had excellent success in similar situations with fiberglass patching but its messy and might still leave you with a clearance problem (but you can sand it down to fit, you can sand/grind JB Weld too). You could try using hi temp RTV sealer. It wont be nearly as strong as JB Weld, but there shouldnt be much positive pressure in the reserve tank (I imagine almost none). Since the RTV is elastic it may not leak, that is if it seals in the first place. Option two, get a new reserve tank at the junkyard

Thanks alot. I was actually starting to search the internet for a new power steering pump, but I think I'll hold off for another couple of days and see if some of your suggestions work first. Anything that would save on my bank account would be worth the extra little bit of time. Thanks again for your help.

If anyone else has any ideas to throw at me I would love to hear them. Thanks guys.
