  • 96+ LQ1 top end swap

So I am thinking about swapping over a 96 upper and lower intake on to my 95 GTP

I was going to get a 95 top end to use as a core to P&P and powder coat, but a friend found a 96 LQ1 at the wreckers, so I might as well do that.

What parts do I have to get from the LQ1 to complete the swap?
    What advantages/disadvantages does this carry?

I'm not looking to do heads, just the upper and lower intakes

Advantages: it will pull better and to redline since it moves your power band up more (actually past redline, which can be adjusted back down with the cam timing deal).

Disadvantages: Josh's (OldskoolGP) used to whistle at idle going down the road because of the way the air was being drawn into the TB. It's not free to do (unless you have a 96/7 engine laying around). It takes time to put on your engine. I think unless you get creative you loose cruise.

IMHO if you can get a setup for cheap, there is no reason not to do it if you are interested in performance. The 96/7 top end flows much better then the 91/5 because of the huge ports.

There is more to it then that. The 96/7 LIM bolts are different, you need the rear valve cover because it is different, and that is two quick things I can think of off the top of my head that are different. That writeup I posted is the one Josh did after doing his and includes everything you need and what you need to do to get it to work.

Sweet, well the wreckers I plan to get it from tomorrow is being a dick over the phone, they think I'm looking for a 3400 top end (yeah, off a 96, morons)

I guess I will take off the whole assembly and take all the parts that come with it and just low ball the crap out of them. I got a line on a whole engine running for $400 so there is no way I'm paying more than half that for just the top end.

I don't care about whistling, lol, honestly my exhaust is loud enough that I probably won't notice.

I am doing a custom intake, not sure about details yet, but I will figure something out.

I don't use cruise (mainly because it has never worked in this car) So I will probably just end up pulling the cruise components anyway.

          So, to sum it up
          LIM
          UIM
          TB
          TB arm
          rear cam cover
and I read somewhere T-stat housing... I will give that thread you posted a good read too

          Thanks

            - fuel rail (with the lines going into fuel rail to use the quick connectors)
            - throttle cable ( Cruise cable is different, got to adapt)
            - coolant line (going from coolant port on front of engine to LIM)
            - Coolant line going to heater core from Intake Manifold
            - YES, T-Stat housing
            - Get the sensor connectors with a few inches of wire to make it easy to use IF your using for example the 96' MAP sensor.
            - The EGR is different so it must be DELETED or something custom made to use old style/function.

            - Intake gasket set for 96'-97' 3.4 DOHC
            - Vacuum line

                Got it all!
$85 out the door!! I thought that was a good score...

We got everything that was attached to the upper and lower manifolds with the exception of the EGR and EGR pipe (I didn't have a wrench for the pipe anyways).

I'm going to take a look at my EGR and maybe machine an adapter to put my stock EGR on it. I can't go EGR delete because of Ontario E-test laws...

I'm going to look into having all the parts hot dipped and powder coated in the next couple weeks.

Good luck with it. I still think it was one of the best upgrades for the omeny that I made. Also, it was brought to my attention that a couple of the part numbers were not correct. Not sure if those were changed in the writeup, but double check before you order.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

Might as well do OBDII upgrade now!

Sorry to go n00b all over this, but in your pics I see UIM, LIM, fuel rail, rear valve cover/cam carrier cover. Throttle cables maybe?? What else is there. I'm thinking about this swap on my '95 as well. Just trying to make sure I kinda know what I'm doing before I dig into it. Thanks!!!!!

You will have to do something custom for the EGR unless you are going to just delete it.

Things that are different are EGR, front and back cam covers, UIM, LIM, throttle, throttle arm, throttle cable, cruise cable, fuel rail, fuel rail connect ends, metal coolant line that runs a long the front of the engine.

And to make it all run good, OBDII Swap! Get someone to give the PCM a quick tune and turn off all the codes that need to be turned off. The 95 ECM will run ok, but not great!

Well the way things are shaping up this intake won't find its way on the car until next winter.

I have thought about doing an OBD 2 swap but its an assload of electrical work...

It's not that bad. Only like 2 or 3 wires have to be switched out. And 2 wires added in. It's worth it! Runs much better! There really are not many people that can tune OBD1.5. So you are going to be getting pretty bad gas mileage.
