Rear end Limited Slip fluid in a dying tranny?

This is crazy....i was told that if your tranny is slipping and on the way out you could add a bottle of rear end limited slip additive and itll get you a bit further....hmmmm I might have to call bs on this one!! I currently dont have a dying tranny, but somehow we got on the subject. I could maybe see the feasibility in this theory because technically a tranny only slips because of worn bands (among other related things) and if you add this "friction modifier" it may get you off the side of the road and to a shop. I would only consider this if i just happened to have the additive handy and im on the side of the road in butt F@#ked egypt with a dead tranny lol you got to do what you got to do!!! What do you guys think about this?

The friction modifier in limited slip differentials reduces friction. It would actually make things worse.

brake fluid is what will get u off the side of the road,

brake fluid swells up the seals and clutches in the transmission,once u put it on though the trans will need an entire rebuild, but if ur not far from home it will get u there

Actually, limited slip additive enhances friction. A limited slip differential incorporates clutch plates where the use of a friction modifier can come into play to enhance the "grabbing" power of the clutches. It also reduces the chatter you can sometimes get with certain differentials.


Who has a dying tranny and doesnt mind throwing a bottle of limited slip additive to it? Just kidding guys Personally I wish I had an opportunity to test this theory, but i dont have any vehicles with a slipping transmission.

Friction modifier, no change.

Brake fluid, 1st stopped slipping, idk how long it worked, i dorve the car today addition 18 miles, had to come to complete stops about 12 times, no slip.

2nd gear minor slip gone too.

Limited slip additive reduces friction. The chatter in the clutches is due to excessive friction, they are binding rather than being allowed to slip properly when going around corners. Putting in the additive make the oil more slippery and the chatter goes away. How would increasing the friction cause the binding to go away?

Trans fluid is basically just high qualty 10 weight motor oil with some friction modifyers and detergent added.

Brake fluid would likely get you off the road, but it would do alot of damage while it's doing that. (How many folks carry that much brake fluid with them anyway??)

Think COMPLETE rebuild, but then you likely need that anyway.

type F trans fluid might help it... i ran that in a half dead TH400 and it made it another 6 months before crapping all 3 forward gears.

driving a 300+ HP Trans Am backwards was fun though.

Might work.

Type F doesn't have as many of the friction modifyers that Dexron has and would be a possible option.

But it's still a bandage on surgery at best IMHO
