I bought some 17" x 7.5" rims for my 97 grand am.. i had originally planned on putting 225 tires on it..but... could i go with a wider tire on that rim? perhaps a 235 or a 245 even? or will i run into wheel well clearance issues? Ive looked around on a few sites and ive gotten mixed answers, tire rack said 225 is the widest i could put on that rim, and bridgestone said i could use a 245 tire. But i would really like to know if a 245 would fit without rubbing the front wheel wells. thanks guys

RE: Tire Size
I have 215/17s on my Beretta and they rub the wheel wells on some turns, but I am also lowered ~1", so that may make a difference.-Brad-

If they game from a TGP they are 16x8. If they are from a GTP, then theyre probably 16x6.5Originally posted by pepsi_cokeThose crosslace stock rims in your cardomain site .. I thought those were 16x8 rimsOriginally posted by grandprixgtp_91yeah my gtp had 245/50z/r16's on the stock 6.5 rims.

Thats not completely true...To run a 245 or 235 on a GA he would have to run a 40 series. Most 40 series tires in that width are designed to run on an 8" wheel. You could probably squeeze them on, but your not going to get the maximum performance from the width of that tire. Not to mention if something were to happen where you needed to use the manufactures warranty (If one is provided)...the manufacture will tell you your SOL because you didn't go by their recommendations.Originally posted by pwminyou can fit 245's on 6.5" wheels, but im not sure if they will rub on a grand am.
Best bet for that wheel would be a 225/45...67 Olds Cutlass 2bbl 330 w/ 2 speed Jetaway

I don't think I've heard of anyone putting 245's on a Grand Am. with 17x7.5 you should be able to fit 235/40-17 (just a guess at the ratio). What is the stock tire size? Isn't it 225/50-16... or at least that is the optional size right? If so you should be able to fit 235/40-17's without rubbing. And those will fit on a 17x7.5" wheel. If in doubt you can always check www.tirerack.com they usually have the rim width specs for each tire size.--Rob
