  • Compressor Surge demonstration

    This is the opposite of what is usually an under turboed engine where generally two small a turbo over time may create problems for the engine and turbo, too large a turbo (allowing boost points to the left of the surge line) can result in damage to the compressor.

    i always did wonder what surge sounded like... it's always been described to me as "barking", which kind of sounds like that actually...
    1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

      Here is another decent demonstration video showing what flutterdump sounds like (BOV opening too late, letting the turbo flutter until it opens).

      This video is intended to help people identify another form of compressor surge that we're calling FLUTTERDUMP.

        If you look closely at a turbo map, you will find the surge limit to the far right side of the map. The surge limit is the point where the compressor has excessive pressure built up at a point where the engine is unable digest the incoming air. This means that it can happen at even low RPMS.

        The damage is caused when the superheated turbine blades are bent due to the combined twisting forces of the exhaust pressure and the surging compressor . Its the roughly equivilant to twisting a driveshaft.
        Took a break from working on the car. Got some better tools, got a better shop, got a better job... Its time to burn metal!

          Close, but I believe you have things switched around a little. The choke line is to the far right side of the map and is a combination of high wheel speed and low efficiency. The surge line is to the left side of the map and occurs when too large a comressor wheel/turbo is being used for the application, or shock waves to the proper size turbo from the throttle slamming shut under moderate to high boost pressure in an intake system that lacks proper pressure bypass via a blow off valve, over stressing the blades.

              Whoops... My bad! The right side. (Doh!) I did a half-assed job of trying to recalling from memory. (Gotta a bad case of crs)
