Looking to pull the GTP out of the storage garage it's been in for a few years, and start working on it again. Now that I've got a daily driver, I figure I might as well do a 5-speed swap for it. What all cars can I get the transmission itself out of, or am I stuck with W-Bodies? And if that's the case, anyone care to make a quick list of all the parts I'm going to need?

Only the W-bodies had the 284 in them and with that only the dohc had the 284 option, so they are hard to find. I found a 92 grand prix SE with a 284 in it and im planning on going back to the junkyard to pull it all out. I'm looking at doing a swap myself. You can put a 282 in the car but apparently need modifications done to get it in right, the 284 just bolts in and you only have to splice a few wires.Originally posted by Husky View PostLooking to pull the GTP out of the storage garage it's been in for a few years, and start working on it again. This is a list I've gathered from posts on here:
284 5 speed transmission
2 front axles
Intermediate Shaft Mount
Intermediate Shaft
5 speed pedal bracket assembly with pedals and switches,
5 speed specific Firewall Plate,
Clutch Reservoir,
Clutch Line & Master/Slave Cylinder,
Trans. case breather tube (metal tube that mounts to strut tower),
2 - Shifter Cables,
5 speed center consoleLast edited by GTP091; 12-29-2008, 03:29 AM.1991 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP / 3.4 DOHC

282 was just the 5-speed they used with 2.3s, no? Why would it need to be modified?Last edited by Husky; 01-02-2009, 01:16 AM.1994 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Special Edition, Black 5-Speed

Yes, that is the hm 282.Originally posted by n_c_mail View Postwhat about the 5 speeds out of the early 90s 3.1 L beretta's...could they be used on a 3X00 set up??
Yes the 282 was used on the 2.3's as well, but those got a different bellhousing(swappable to v6) and shorter gears95 Beretta- Lg8 Daily Driver
94 Beretta z26- First ever 5-speed 3500 L body- In the works.

Not entirely sure but if I remember right the mounts are different and there is a difference in how it bolts up. It sounds like this swap is a pain in the ass to begin with so making it easier with the right parts is good start.Originally posted by Husky View Post282 was just the 5-speed they used with 2.3s, no? i just completed the 5 speed swap on my GP and used a 282 out of a GP. The NON-wbody 5 speeds wont bolt up because the lower mounting holes are different. I was told you could make it work with a drill/ tap n die but i myself prefer direct bolt ins. Find a v6 w-body with a 5 speed and take everything from that car. Pre 91 is a 282, post 91 is a 284 i believe.

You can use a 282, but if you're bolting it up to a 3.4 you need to be careful because they weren't built to handle a ton of power. They can be modified with tougher parts to handle more power, but stock they are not that strong. A 284 on the other hand is pretty much bullet proof. The internals are pretty much indestructible except for the synchro on 2nd which has wear issues, but a competent stick shift driver will have no problems.
Whatever gearbox you decide to go with, you will need to source all of your parts from a car that had that gearbox. The 282 and 284 had big differences in how they operated, especially with the clutch hydraulics. A 282 hydraulic clutch system will not work on a 284, and vice versa. If you choose to go the 284 route, I have some extras of the parts you will need. I have a complete hydraulic clutch setup and a sparwe flywheel. I may have other parts as well but I can't remember at the moment.I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

OldSkool, got the cables and brackets for them laying around? Also, do I even -need- the breather tube? The Z34 I was pulling this from didn't have one.1994 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Special Edition, Black 5-Speed

Interesting... I thought the geared disc that the starter engages on is the flywheel?Originally posted by OldSkoolGP View PostAutomatics don't have a flywheel. They have a thin sheet metal flex plate that bolts to the crank and the torque converter.1991 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP / 3.4 DOHC

The donor manual 92 Grand Prix SE I found had what looked like a vacuum pump on it as well... It didn't look like it was connected to the tran in any way but was mounted underneath the passenger side fender. I've only ever seen this on manual cars with the 284. No idea what it is though.Originally posted by Husky View Post284 5 speed transmission GOT IT

Technically that is the starter ring gear. Most of the time it is attached to the flywheel/flexplate but not always.Originally posted by GTP091 View PostInteresting... I thought the geared disc that the starter engages on is the flywheel?
