Wrong Flywheel? need a quick answer

I see you live in my old stomping ground. I lived just off Tram road near the Fair grounds. If you are familiar with it you know Tram road is a nice long straight stretch of road that at least a few years ago was bounded mostly by forest. I'm sure there's a house or apartment complex every 5 ft now. I had quite a few triple digit runs on it. Across capital circle it's nearly an endless stretch outside the city limits.

I'm out on the east side of the county, been here all of my life. Tram after capital circle is nice for some high speed test driving too .

I just want to know what else is done to this car that I don't know about. I'll pull the valve cover tommorrow. Where exactly is it?

Got the right flywheel in, much better. Is there a way to tell if the heads are the old carb heads or fuel injected heads besides pulling them off and checking the valve size. Since I know that the block is the older version I wonder if the heads are too.

Like Betterthanyou said, you need to confirm, the 2pc rear main seals are 86 and earlier blocks (small journal cranks).

I guess that I will have to get a new flywheel for an 86 or older Camaro? I have the original flywheel in my garage, too bad there isn't a part number on it.

No you cannot just remove the weight. But in your case it seems you need a flywheel with a weight. So you are going to have to swap that flexplate out.

There is no way to tell externally. But if you have the flexplate off then check the rear main seal. 1 piece means internal balance 2 piece means external balance.

The weight is welded on the back. You must have used a early model external balance flywheel. Remove the inspection cover and rotate the engine by hand an look for the weight on the back.

I'll look at it when I get home from work. If it has a weight on the back could I just cut it off with a grinder? I hope this is what it is, the easiest fix.

Called the mechanic and he said that the old flywheel had a balance weight on it. So I guess that the motor in the car now isn't the original motor. Is there any casting numbers that I can look for on the block/heads to find out what year it is from to make sure. I know that the car is an 89, just looks like that the motor is a pre87 motor.

I can't seem to find it now, but I thought we used to have some comparison pictures in the gallery of an internally and externally balanced flywheel.

You can't use a flywheel from a manual in an automatic car, so it would have been another auto car that your new flexplate came out of. For the RWD engiens, 87 started the internally balanced cranks. Is it possible your engine is not original and is an earlier pre 87 externally balanced crank?

Its possible but I have no way of knowing, as far as I know this is the original motor. Is there a way to tell if it is pre 87 besides the flywheel? I thought that the 2.8 and 3.4 flywheels were pretty much the same and interchangable. I'll call the guy who worked on the car and see if the old flywheel had a weight on it.

The rattling from my car was the flywheel, it was ****ed and about to break. About to look like Dave's did. Anyways I got it replaced with one from a 3.4 that I had laying around in the garage but now the car has a significant vibration while driving or in park. Its not that bad at idle or around 3K RPM. Other than that it will rattle your teeth out. Could I have used the wrong flywheel? I'm going to check out some other things on the motor. Before I took it to the mechanic it didn't vibrate at all, now after it is. The mechanic is going to check it out tommorrow so maybe its something easy.

89 Camaro auto, not sure if the flywheel came from an auto or manual car if it matters.
