  • Factory crank shaft (F-Body 3.4)

How strong is the factory crank in the 3.4 (1995 Camaro) .. I ask because while I am swapping out the rods and pistons for stronger, boost friendly internals, I am curious as to whether or not the crank is worth exchanging for something stronger - if there is such a thing. Let me know what you guys think/know.

Unless you want to spend $2000+ US at minimum for a crank, there is no stronger part, off the shelf would be even harder to find.

The 3.31" stroke crank has seen some high numbers layed down, without any indication of failure, a few people in the 300+ HP range, and even 400+ Ft/lbs, using stock cranks, or stock heat treated cranks.

hmm. well I guess I will wait until the crank fails to replace it

J body Performance makes a forged steel crankshaft in the 3.1 stroke. Its nowhere near $2k dollars either.

its more like $700. Might be worth it pending on how much power you plan to make.

Dont' know the website. I would do a google search for it

I'll be up around ~350-400 rwhp if that gives you any ideas.

Last I heard the crank design they had seems to have flex issues, and the price was closer to the $2K mark. I know Mev wanted to work out some details before releasing it.

It's been done on stock internals. Okay, only 336rwhp. But dang close.

The 3.4L 60* motor uses a nodular iron crankshaft. same material the Z28's crank is made out of. i know plenty of Z28 guys that are pushin 500 or so hp / more than 500 tq thru their Z and havent chagned out the crank. if the stock nodular iron v8 crank can take that much abuse, why cant ours? its made of the same material and probably the same process.

and by the by, tiago isnt just a "smart guy with a 3.4" -- tiago does some amazing shit, more than you could probably dream up. he hasnt switched his camshaft out yet (and since he is a personal close friend of mine i would know this) because he hasnt had the interest to do so. he isnt sure of what kind of cam he wants or what direction he wants to go in with his car right now as far as im aware of.

you might think you have better ideas, but im pretty sure tiago has thought of them already. have you figured out how to tune your comp to really take advantage of all the mods you are gonna do? have you thought about the right cam/head/piston/intake combo? have you figured out exactly what turbo / supercharger you want, twin or single, what kind of intercooler you want, are you gonna do a cO2 spray, do you know what you need to back up the motor to make sure it gets the right fuel and everything else?

there is a lot more to making your car do what tiagos did than just getting lucky. hes thought a lot about things, and i dont want his intelligence dismissed as just "smart guy with a 3.4L".

have some more respect for the man - aight?

Um no, a smallblock crank is MUCH stronger than ours. Even fire v6's use a split journal crank which is weaker by comparison to a shared journal crank. If you want mega torque and no chance of failure from a V6 crank a oddfire crank is MUCH stronger.

lol - tiago is good with the 3.4s, as I said, but I've done my homework. Yes, I know exactly what blower my motor will be using, heads, intake manifold work, etc etc.. The computer and crank are my current and so far only issues .. aside from the fact that I need to find a place to mount the blower under the hood---but thats more asthetic than anything else right now. If I'd stop trying to make it look as good as it will run then I could have figured out a way to have a bracket and everything done by now -- but I haven't given up on that yet. Also, yes, I'll be using a Vortech Aftercooler for my cooling needs And for injectors, I'm going to start out using some Z28 stock injectors then test it out and see how much more I'll need... I've got it all figured out bro -- Tiago did some amazing stuff, yes, but instead of paying for someone to weld the LT1 throttlebody up to mine I'll be doing all that work myself. I have respect for Tiago, but theres a whole lot more power that can be made with the 3.4 F-Bodies.

Wow... I don't even know you, and you're coming off as really stuck up... Trust me, there is nothing at all easy about what Tiago's done, and I have great admiration for him.

I, too, plan on outrunning his 3.4, and with .3 less liters, non the less! 14B on a 2.8 - DONE. Let's see how a 550cfm 16G does on the MAF based 3.1 I'm running now... there are a couple guys doing work on this, too - Seriously, no need to knock anyone - I give serious props to anyone with the nads to actually undertake a project like I have, or Tiago, or Techsmurf (on Thirdgen.org) or Raven here. It's not easy! We should all get together, with teh force fed 60ºs, and have a big ass shootout for title of baddest 60º in the land.
