Well it ended with 'lets hear your opinions', not 'I started another thread to do something else...'

That's great to hear but this project is all but dead. The decision to go with a near stock 3100 quicky evolved into a descision to go with a near stock 3400. That discussion found here:

    http://60degreev6.com/forum/f96/3400...asktets-t44220.

I really would have loved to try the 2800 but for a daily driven street car I couldn't take the risks of anything going wrong. I'm already having issues with my 3400 but if you want to know about those you need to see the other thread.

Well after some diagnosis I found that my the piston rings are done on the #1 cylinder of my 3.1 so no there is no doubt that an engine swap is a go. I had originally planned on having this done by mid this month but it doesn't look like that's going to happen due to time constraints. I'm shooting to have the motor swapped by the end of September. The 3.1 is running ok so it's not an immediate concern.

I went to see a 3100 yesterday. It apparently has a noise. The guy who swapped the motor was talking about timing chain tensioners/guides and lifters. I have to tear it down anyway so whatever the noise is, it will be fixed. All the accessories are missing but my neighbor just seized the 3100 in his Grand Am so I get all the accessories for free. I still have to go see a guy about the 2.8RWD pistons. The 26915 springs were ordered last night. Hopefully I'll have all the part in hand by mid september so I can get going on this project. I'm not seeing the swap taking longer than a weekend.

Ok people I need Pros and Cons that I haven't already though of. As I said before I got a 3100 for 75$. I need to be convinced I'm better off doing the 2800 rather than just porting the top end of the 3100 and going with that. This is what I've coem up with so far.

    3100 Pros
Stock compression = 89 octane fuel
No issues with part not fitting or machine work needed
will run fine with 3X00 swap chip

    3100 Cons
    It's just a 3100
Not potentially as good on gas as a 2800
With a UDP and port work, 62mm tb and a good tune I'll probably be close to 200 hp (or am I dreaming without a cam) and will probably need at least a Stage 1 clutch to never have slip.

    2800 Pros
Just a cool idea but is a cool idea really worth if for a motor that supposed to be reliable.
    Better on gas

    2800 Cons
Timing Chain, I'm not willing to get anything other than a stock replacement timing and that's if I don't use the low mileage one off my 3400.
    Tuning Issues
    Possible Fitment/Machine Work Issues
    Getting a 2.8 Crank & Pistons.

From a power perspective I could not spend the money on a crank and pistons for a 2800 and just get a clutch for the increased power of the 3100. From an efficiency perspective will I really get that much better mileage with a 2800 than a 3100?? If not then I'd rather have the power, the ability to run on 89 octane and the overall reliability of a basically stock engine.

    Let's hear your opinions..

I picked up one of my cranks (others are not easy to get at right now)on saturday morning and the casting # is 526 not 981 like the 3.1 crank so I think it is the one your looking for! It will need to be cut to clean up. I will see if I can get it over to the machine shop tomorrow night and get it inspected.

Cranks are expensive to ship and that will probably blow the budget...

1QUICKHATCH where exactly in Ontario are you located?? I may have some friends coming in from Ontario soon.

I am in Guelph approx 50mins west of Toronto. Where are you located?

The above numbers are on Rock Auto if you look up an internal balance RWD 2.8. That's what it shows, one with trigger and I'm guessing the other is without.

No idea..Can anyone help with the casting number here?? The crank I was supposed to get is apparently a 3.1 crank.
