I helped my dad on a few cars before with bodywork and paint. He has since begun going to a professional, not because we didn't do a good job, but just due to the time and money involved. He'd rather pay a guy a little more than to spend countless hours on something, when there is always other things that need to get done. He still does little items himself, but whole cars go out to get done.

Painting a house or a building is nothing like painting a car Never say body work is easy, you'll be cussing yourself for that one. LOL

I for-see that tan becoming a burn when things do run amok.

    Good luck

As good as I am doing the mechanical part, I brought my car to my cousin to do my body and paint work. He pushes out 30k paint jobs on some cars so I figured he would do a good job.

lol, at least you thought about making it easier for yourself down the road.

Hopefully I am done with larger scale projects for now.

The body work will be much less stressful. Being I was a professional painter for 10+ years. I did A LOT of high end commercial, some industrial mixed with an occasional 2+ million dollar home.

I was considered on of the best in the region. My work was fast, clean and pleasing to the eye.

My cut lines were straight like a machine painted it.

So painting, body work is easy. I look forward to a nice sunny day getting my spring tan back while working on the body.

The paint job I have planned will look sharp, very sharp. I have a few ideas that will bring out the bodies design. Like white strips along the bottom with a solid black where the panels are indented. White top with 2 large black racing strips and a small black strip along the outer edges.

And also a chrome line just under the side windows running down the side of the body.

I'll be sure to post a pic when it is done.

There are many needed qualities to make a great mechanic/auto technician.

Two of which I learned are patience and persistence. To drop your fuel tank 3x's in a week clearly shows you got those two, patience and persistence.

I salute you my friend, lol. Once was more then enough for me in a year!

btw, car is fixed. See "We have lift off!" thread in misc

    THE PUMP IS IN!!!

I did it myself (pat on back) lol. And I didn't need to modify anything remarkably.

The tank is back in the car nice and tight. Only thing I have to do now is connect the filler tube and 3 other lines in the rear side. The front 3 lines are connected.

I also cleaned out the tank, wasn't hard. The pump filter was real clean but I used a new one anyways.

I had to stop after working an hour in the rain. Tomorrow I'll get the rest of the lines and filler up for a test pressurization then a test run.

It was a PITA but I did it. Ahhhh, I can relax knowing the rest is very easy stuff.

WOOHOO!!! I love that victory feeling!!!

edit: i know it isn't as big an accomplishment as a turbo install, but the working conditions made it a royal pita. Thats why I was so psyched. I had to do it outside in the driveway to get that little bit room from the pavement curve and for ventilation. Then it had to rain just as I had the tank under the car w/ new pump. My upper body was dry but my lower half was soaked.

1/4 tank on the Base cluster = empty. Z26 full gauges though it's not like that. I've ran it down to the red before. But I do want to say 1/4 tank with a stock pump that the car lacks balls. Just throwing in a few gallons when it's at 1/4 improves the performance WOT a lot, suggesting there is getting some air in the line when at 1/4 tank. When I ran 16.0 stock I had more than 1/4 tank and perhaps that is the reason I got a good time for being stock, as others might run 1/4 or less trying to save weight. That or my car is/was a factory freak compared to most 3100 L bodies... Mine would smoke my friends 96 Corsica...

I was just going by what many others have said before me, if you hack the bucket, then don't run below 1/4 tank.

If the W bodies don't have the bucket, then you can ignore the above.
That statement wouldn't surprise me though, since now with no bucket the pickup for the pump is a bit higher than the bottom of the tank, but since we have all those plastic things in our tank to prevent a lot of fuel movement, and that the return fuel is pumped right back into that location, it has prevented me from having an issue...

But yes, typically I try to keep it above 1/4 anyways since I do know the pump is not at the BOTTOM of the tank, but about 1/4"-1/2" up.

Plus with that car's fuel usage, and my rural location a 1/4 tank may not get me to a gas station in time... LOL I say this as my red car is in the parking lot at 1/8th tank and I have a 22mile ride home. At my current fuel usage though I only need 1 gallon to get it done.

Yeah, that is why the shop is doing it. For $100, that isn't bad at all.

I can jack up the front end nice and high to get under due to the way the frame is. But the rear I can only get so high and it is too cramped to drop the tank. If the straps were clean and new, I'de attempt it but I have a feeling I may end up breaking something if I did it. There just isn't enough room for me to do it.

I can relax for a few days and forget about the car for the time being. I need a recharging. I have been at it for over a month many many hours a day.

I'm glad the fuel pressure was real low and how it bleed off fast after shut down. Because it means the problem has been identified and will be corrected as well as getting a 255 lph pump

But I knew this watching the PCM asking for more fuel in the fuel trims. When I set the tables to reflect the demand, it asked for more still and I added it again. Still was asking for more fuel, more fuel, more fuel. It just wasn't getting it. And the pressure from teh schrader valve was near nothing after a few minutes from shut down. I know I should've had a fuel pressure gauge but it was too obvious. Still getting the fuel pressure gauge soon for the dash, just to have it for future reference.

We all know how it goes. If I buy it I won't need it. If I don't buy it, I'll need it

This was a great install guide for the walbro in a first gen W body, but for me the pics are down. YMMV

The non hp 255 pump is nearly identical to the factory unit and is literally plug and play. Getting the tank in and out is the bitch. The pump is cake.

The W-bodie's don't have a "Bucket" on the fuel sending unit.

great, thanks for the help. I had ordered the gss307. The shop didn't get the $10 stock pump in yet so they will wait for the gss307. The tech said he could get it to fit even if it needed a little modifying. He said he done stuff like that before so no worries.

No FMU, the fuel supply is increased through the PCM tuning with 36# inj.

Now, I need to research MAF tuning a little more while I wait. I'm soo close to completion.

So far, one step at a time. I'm going to take a week or two break once the engine is tuned and the car is streetable. Then it's time to do some body work. Only a few dings and no real dents. Shes gonna get a good power sanding, two color priming to find surface defects then a nice full gloss paint job, finish with a waxing. Call me crazy but I like waxing my car. It is gratifying.

Again, thanks for all your help guys.

    You mean like this

    LOL
Yeah I didn't like that whole venturi system, But I have yet to notice any issues with fuel pressure when run below a 1/4 tank

I buy my pumps from APE USA. Never had a problem with one yet, and the one I bought back in 05 is still in my red car running strong. I used the FPG003 kit.
