  • Converting From MAF (88 Lbody) to NON maf sensor setup?

i know someone has done it or has read how to do it.... i cant for the life of me remember what was involved... should pay more attn to these things.

im in the middle of doing a 3.1L HYBRID engine for a guy. the engine is built (3.1L bottom end, 3100 top end) and i noticed last night taking the engine out that its got the crapola MAF sensor in there. arghghg.

i mean its no big deal to keep it in there really, simply fit it in the intake setup. but what a restriction to flow.

the car in question is a 88 2.8L beretta, 5psd. anyway to rid the car of the maf and run completely off the MAP?

Ahh speed density is what you mean. And yes I am pretty sure that with a computer reprogram it can be eliminated.

Ask 3100 MPFI.. I was talking to him at the meet this last summer and he was talking about it. Something with the wire? I don't remember but he knows.

BTW my car used to have a MAF but it broke twice so I just yanked the ***er out. It runs a little lean (woun't pass the e-test), but it runs fine.

AFAIK (or remember), all that is required is a PROM change. Make it a mass air program instead of speed density. And then connect the MAP wire to the IAT I think?

You have to find a chip that has the non-MAF programming, and 5-speed for your car.

All I did when I converted was change out the chip, wired up the IAT (of the 5 wires going to the MAF, you use the first and second wire (I think it is either GREY, or TAN and a BLACK wire. All I remember is that it was the 2 end wires, and one was black).

I also had to change out the speed sensor drive in the tranny, but I am not sure how to go about doing that for a 5-speed car (seeing that mine is automatic).

I think GM offers a PROM to convert MAF engines to speed density. At least they did when I worked at a dealership a few years ago.

There is one. They did it as a recall on 1988 w-body cars with MAF. All you did was change out the EPROM, and it converted the car to speed density. You did not have to change out anything else. The MAF sensor stays there, but it now works as a BIG MAT sensor. I choose to do it the way that I did so that I could remove the restrictive MAF, and put in a stock airbox instead of the "COFFEE-CAN" that people like to make fun of.

Changing out the EPROM really did not do much for power. All I noticed is that the slight BOG that the car had every once in a while was not there any more.

crap.. I started a new post for this topic

ok I did what Taylor did.. however my car is parked at the moment so I don't know if I need a new speed sensor drive. Guess the only way to find out will be when I'm able to drive it
But I've very very happy because the SES light is finally OFF after like 3 years of defective MAF. Seems to be idling better too. That MAF can burn in hell!

seeing that I had to replace my speed sensor, chances are, you will need to as well. Lets just say that you will know almost immediatly if you need to. Your speedo will suddenly become VERY optimistic.

Sounds like the time Ben sent me a chip... Suddenly, I was able to do 100mph on my driveway!

in the short distance of about 1 block, my car was suddenly doing 84 MPH, instead of the normal 32 MPH. Lets just say that I WISH my car could accelerate that fast. VERY OPTIMISTIC!!!!!

                              speed sensor location?

I'm to lazy to find my Haynes manual.. so I'll ask here.

I need to change the speed sensor. Took it for a drive down the road to pick up the mail and when I reached my house I was going 70km/h.. lol
Where is the speed sensor located? Do I need one from a 2.8 or would one from a 3.1 work? I'll probably just get the one out of the car i got the PROM from.
