Maybe the engine was running low on coolant and siphoned air into the block somehow causing it to overheat.

Not everytime a engine overheats will it warp heads.

My Beretta 3.1 blew a water pump mid-summer, water everywhere, engine was well really hot buried needle, I pulled into the school lot about 3 miles after, had my father go get a new pump and coolant. Fixed in on the spot. Later removed the heads and they were not warped however this is a push rod. My point is if the heads were properly torqued from the get go warpping should be minimal at best or none at all.
