Sputtering and Chugging exhaust

I noticed today in the cold, when i started the 95 (3.4L), it wouldnt hold an idle well. The exhaust made a sputtering and chugging noise... what would cause this? the reason i ask is becuase the other car ('92 3.4L) does this too when it starts, but the 95 has never done this before.

Did the idle surge up and down at all? Maybe vacuum leak (from the intake gaskets)?
