Oil Cooler R&R

I gotta do the starter on the wife's 92 3.4 DOHC Lumina and the manual says to remove the oil cooler assembly. I understand this is located under the oil filter. Is it a PIA to do or pretty straightforward. Or maybe not even necessary?

it isnt necessary but gives a little more room. i'd try without removing it because it makes a big mess of oil and coolant

But it is really easy to remove, there is just a large, but not tight, bolt going down the center.
