Interesting. I just went by the site of the crash. If you notice on the video, the Firebird is already airborn before hitting the guardrail. That's because there is a drain about 6 feet in front of it, making a perfect launching pad. The car actually struck the rail about 1 foot off the ground. Joey Chitwood could not have set up a better ramp, than the ODOT.

The guy is still an idiot though, and apparently still alive. No explanations yet.

And just in case you are wondering. Those drains are in front of every overpass set of safety device guardrails. Yeah the guy is an idiot, but..... Watch the vid again. See the dirt kicked up before he tags the rail? Very cool wreck.

yeah i noticed the brakes too. i know it's a panic reaction but at that point even he had to know he was screwed.

kid's lucky the car didn't turn the other way and hit the pole with the driverside.

I haven't heard anything further with the story.

Only funny thing is that the highway department put up the wire style guard rails along a good part of this highway, but not in the section where this happened.

LOL, seems like he got off easy?

i mean damn.... he could have killed/injured a lot of people if he flew into the oncoming lane instead of hitting the overpass.

But he didn't. He wasn't under the influence of anything other than idiocy. All in all though, it was a very enjoyable ride, as long as I get to watch it sitting behind my desk. F.....g Amazing.

you would think he would F***king shave and clean himself up before he stood trial, instead, he looks like some dumb ass punk.

Driving at over 100mph , passing a cop on the left shoulder, and launching into a bridge. = Dumb ass punk. I do agree.

I think he should have to paint the bridge. It still wears the black paint.

WOW! That is a wreck. This video should be shown to students preparing for their licenses. It would show them how easy a simple passing can turn tragic in a short period of time. And I thought my brothers wreck was bad.....just wow.

Bringing this back up. This video will be featured on a NatGeo show on the 10th of July. Indestructibles. Marks are still on the bridge. Pretty sure of the date.

The airborn car has already been explained. The area now, has been protected from any auto going into the hole.
