I didn't ues a gasket on my turbo downpipe and had no problems. Need to start with some 1/2" steel, and have it milled perfectly flat (after welding if warping occurs).

Would a cut to fit graphite gasket work? Like the material used on EGR gaskets?

Yes, i had thought about that, but i was under the impression that the 3500 manifolds used the same style ring seal as 3400 manifolds, just with a smaller ring..... i wonder, can anyone get ahold of JUST the ring seals? if i can get two of those, i can have some flanges made cheap cheap

Haha. Gen III > Gen II for sure

FWIW, these are useless withough a flange. Which are a BITCH to find, you have to get to the cars at the J/Y before they pull the motor out, and that's hard to time just right. That's why i have a pair of the fronts sitting in my garage for the last 6 months
A flange is easy to make out of 3/8" or 1/2" steel if you have access to a mill (or would be pretty inexpensive at a machine shop). Then you could just weld them to pipe.
