    3.1-3100 interchange

i know this question has been asked before, but i have 2 engines, a 3.1 litre i believe is a gen 2 which is a low mileage good engine complete, and a 1996 buick regal with a 3100 which threw a rod through the block, i was wanting to use the 3.1 block and swap all the 3100 parts on to it,(heads, timing cover, intake, etc.) just wondering what i need to do to swap everything over, if theres anything special or different between the two blocks since all i was using is the 3.1 block.

the blocks are similar, but not a true bolt-on deal. that would actually be a hybrid build.

that should give a good idea of what you would be looking at to do it. but honestly, i'd find another 3100. since yours is a 96, any 96-99 3100 with the same mounts will bolt right in with no problem.the 2000-up 3x00 may require additional work though.

If you are waiting to use the gen2 block in your '96 regal you are going to have a number of problems. The biggest being the lack of a cam sensor and depending on how your motor mounts are set up the 3.1 might not even have the right bosses for your mounts.

I would just find another 3100 or a 3400, either will bolt in with very little headaches.
