98 3100 Malibu engine swap

[Identity Crisis]

I am about to pick up a 98 Malibu w/3100 v6.

But the engine is shot, so I will need a swap. Can I drop in a newer 3100 or even a 3400 instead? I mean is there going to be many differences between the engines that wont make it a simple drop in?

I've never done it myself, but apparently either a 2000+ 3100 (which makes more power) or a 3400 will pretty much bolt up without much problem as they are essentially the same engine. I do believe that tuning will get the most out of it though.
