    Shifter Cable Problems

Not to sure how much help I can get here with this but its worth a shot I suppose.

I recently hooked my shifter cables back to the transmission after them being off for an extended period of time due to an engine swap.

Now the problem Im facing is I can freely move the shift lever in the car. I had the old engine removed for me by a gm dealer where I use to work but I don't think I need to go back to them because it is probably something simple Im not hooking up right.

If I have someone hold the part of the cable that is a big collar type thing before where it hooks to the transmission I can get it to shift. But otherwise it just moves to freely. Are the supposed to be attached somewhere to keep them from moving?

Not sure if its important of not but it is a 96 cavalier with a 3x00 V6. Trans if off a 98 2.2 OHV.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

You're probably missing the bracket that attaches to the top of the trans that holds both cables down.
