Help with pistions

K i took my pistions out and i know what pistion goes in what hole but...they are flat and they have a little hole on the right or left side
what im asking is dose it face the water pump side or the flywheel side
(not a hole kinda like a lil dish in a way a BB could fit in it)

If it is a little notch it points towards the front or timing chain side
