95 3.1

I have a 95 monte carlo with a 3.1 that had roller rockers and it blew up so I found a 95 3.1 long block that had conventional rockers. My problem is that I put it together and the engine poped threw the intake so I thought that I may have mixed the push rods up and when I pulled the lower intake off I noticed that the intake rockers were hitting the intake manifold. Can anybody explain this to me?

Was it a running long block when you got it or was it a long block you got from a salvage yard?

Is everything on the engine stock?

There is an issue with the large port manifolds (3400 and 2000+ 3100) not being directly compatible with the stamped rockers. So if you installed one of these manifolds on, then yes, it is going to hit. If all is stock, then there are other issues.

I am not sure as far as I know it is all stock but if it is a 2000 + is there anything I can do??????

You can grind down the bottom of the manifold to clear the rockers, although I have heard of people going through the port due to too much grinding.

Can you send any pics of what you are seeing, as well as pics of the engine itself?

I was the first to discover this problem several years ago, so I have first hand experience....

That is exactly what my intake looks like. It appears to have plenty of meat so I will try to grind itand hope for the best.

If it looks that bad, then be prepared to do some major cleaning, as you will have metal shavings all around the rockers and possibly in the engine. I ended up dumping several quarts of oil in and around every crevice of the engine with the oil pan drain plug removed trying to get all the metal particulate out. If you don't, then you'll just be replacing the new motor very soon.

The engine never started, I only rolled it over a few times and when it popped back threw the intake I quit and tore the intake back off of it to investigate the push rods and that is when I discovered the intake.

I never got mine started either... let me dig up the pick of the rockers...

Mine doesn't look that bad. it had a little shavings but not like that.

I grinded the intake down and will install tomorrow or friday. The rocker arms just torque down to 18 foot pounds right???? I don't have to run it up to top dead center before torquing, is that correct???

Torque to spec (18ft lbs sounds correct) and you are done. I would still rotate the engine by hand with the rocker covers removed and verify all clearances before attempting to start it.
