3.1 fuel issue??

94 Pontiac Grand Prix,w/ 3.1 Car is barely running. You have to pat the accelator pedal numerous times to get it to start, and when you do, you also have to "pat" it to get it to go, and then not much power. Replaced fuel filter, w/ no change. I at first thought fuel pump, but I've never seen a pump go out this way. Any ideas? thank you Steve

First off, welcome to the site!

Next things I'd recommend would be check how your spark is, and then try to do a compression test. How long has this been happening? Did it just start out of the blue, or did it get progressively worse?
