    actually, the unfortunate fact of the matter is that it's one of the steel hoses that runs from the thermostat housing. it's got a threaded fitting that goes into the housing. the problem is that the hose is still connected at the other end (of something) and I can't turn the threaded fitting.

      Ahh, on the back side. That is one of the heater hose lines. If you follow it back, it turns into a rubber hose with clamps, so you could try there. Otherwise, put a wrench on it and gently hit the end of the wrench with a hammer to get it loosened.
