    Double Roller Timing Chain

    Got a quick question. I am going to need a new timing chain very soon on my setup (Comp 260 cam) due to stretching. Now, I have a Vin T 3.1 in an 89 Pontiac Grand Prix so my question is, will these fit? They list them for the Vin T motor but only for Camaros. Which one will prevent stretching that will bolt in? What modifications if any are necessary?

    "They" are working on a kit to make that double roller fit the FWD blocks, right now it won't fit under the timing chain cover..

    Some people have machined out the cover to allow the extra space for the wider chain, some have stacked several gaskets and gotten the clearance needed but i'd just wait for the machined spacer.


    Someone was selling a spacer on ebay about a month ago, you could search around for that...

      Ok. So, should I just use the Comp chain. Thats what I have on there now and Im not too happy with it (little over 3k miles). Plus this is my daily driver so if this snaps, Im screwed.

        hrmm how "much" does the cover need to be taken down too? What kind of risk does machining the cover include? Or does it have really no ill effects?

          I was thinking that even if I had the cover machined to fit, the gear would still be too wide causing the pulley to misalign with the rest of the accessory pulleys.

            Huh? IF you spaced it out then it would cause for some extra work, but if you machined the inner side of the timing cover it would not change the serpentine configuration. If we knew how much to take off the inner side of the TC it might make for a good reliable mod. Although, it leaves me thinking about the timing cover and how thin would it end up being? Also if it would fail (crack/warp) later on down the road?

              I see what you are saying but doesn't the crank pulley rest on the gear.

                Your current chain has stretched already? Doesn't that engine have incredibly low miles on it?

                EDIT: Disregard my post. I'm an idiot and didn't read the entire thread before posting.

                  i think they took about .020 off.

                  most chains will stretch some after a few miles, after that it's mostly wear that makes them looser. if i had one side of the chain tight and the other moved 1/4 inch up and down total, i'd leave it on and not worry about it.
