I may build a 3.1 instead of 3.4 for autox, class rules limits to 3.1L na. Weighing my options here. I know for the 3.4 that I can use the DOHC pistons and get about 10:1 compression. Could I do the same thing with the 3.1, using some other stock piston? Car is an iron head 89 Camaro. Yes I know that I am loosing power here, don't want to do an aluminum head swap yet, want to keep it simple.

Honestly I would stay with the 3.4. If you use the 3.1 stuff on it, it would/will look pretty much the same.
If you are going with the 3.1 you might want to look into Isuzu pistons...I though I had heard one time that they were flat top pistons. I have a pic somewhere...

3.1 with 3400 heads, 3400 head gaskets and 3.1 pistons is about 11:1-11.5:1 (very safe with AL heads) you just need an external DIS
