I was wondering... what is the max HP that has been coaxed out of a 3400sfi? I'm interested in both street legal and race HP

depends on the setup, but i've seen 400+ out of a boosted 3400. I'd imagine with some upgraded internals 600-800 wouldn't be a problem. You'll likely run into transmission problems before engine problems.

you could probably build a 700R4 to take the power.. for a FWD app the HM284 should handle 400-600 depending on the torque, RPM range and driving style.

I 'm just wondering what would be involved in getting the 3400sfi in my GA up to it's maximum street legal potential. this has been difficult to find out since it seems like no one has really tried to do this. so to get it up that high I would need to rebuilt the whole engine right? rods, pistons, ported/polished heads/ uim/lim, TB,... anything I'm missing?
I'm thinking that once I find the cash I would rebuild a 3400sfi and a 5 speed to install in my 2000 GA if the final HP would turn heads and make people say "he got how much HP out of THAT motor?!?"

i think if you're looking to push 600-800HP out of a grand am, you might as well have a tube frame made for it, and hook a T56 or TR6060 up to it.... a lot less likely to blow the tranny to hell that way...

your trans won't hold up so yah.. you'll need to put in a 5 speed or sink alot into the current auto. the HM282 is fairly common and will hold 400 HP easy. Since you are talking about swapping engines anyways.. I'd start off with a 3500 from a '04-06 malibu (or a few other cars). then boost or build that

Asking that question is like asking how much power a small block will make and still be street legal/drivable. It is really up to your budget, skill and imagination.
How much money do you have? Because if you say you want to make 400 horsepower on $2000 well thats not going to happen because that will hardly cover a rebuild. You say you have $10,000 to burn well now were talking and really you can make as much power as your willing to risk. And by that I mean the block, no one really knows what the engine can take since no one has ever been able to break one. Now that 3500 forged cranks are out I don't think the crank is a concern like the old cast ones were. And even they have never been broken.
In the popular world of small blocks everyone knows the limit. Up to 400hp and stock 2 bolt mains are fine. More than that and you want factory 4 bolts mains. Start creeping up on 600hp and billet main caps become necessary and so does a bow tie block. What can you do with a 660? Well who really knows. So if you want to be safe and actually build something you can drive then stay around the same power that other have proven to be reliable. Dumb online HP calculator for my car :
That kind of power (400 or so) can be had on a 3400 ALL DAY LONG. I beat the hell out of my car and besides trannies, it always comes back for more. Stock crank, rods, pistons, ect. Only mod I have is a cam, GM graphite head gaskets and LS6 springs. rest of the motor = stock.Your Crapalier weighs about 2900 pounds and can run the 1/4 mile in about 12.10 seconds. This computes to about 323.54 HP at the wheels, and about 420.60 HP at the flywheel.
I would say on a good tune, you could get a 3400 to 500 crank HP and be reliable.
Trans is easy though, look at the L67 4T65E-HD or whatever it is, they can be built to handle some power.
H282's well, I have had some issues with them and only get about 1.5 seasons out of them. (Hard drag racing use, and I drive it like an arsehole) I am just putting in trans #5 now...
