    what are the differences in 3.1/3x00 crankshafts?

    throughout the different years what are the differences between crankshafts throughout the years?

    i looked on the family tree & in the old articles & didnt come up with anything, so what are the changes/differences between cranks throughout the years?

    3.1mpfi and 3100/3400. No difference. I think even the 3.4L RWD camaro motors and maybe the 3.1's were the same if those motors had DIS (which means they'd have the reluctor for the CPS)

      gen2 3.1, 3.4 DOHC, 3.4 (Camaro), 3100 and 3400 all have the same cast iron "981" crank.
      Past Builds;

        Oh yeah the DOHC. Yeah it was shared between a lot of motors.

          i heard something about some of the 3x00 cranks being aluminum, is this true?

              absolutely not.
              1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

                  thats what i was thinking, so would the steel crank from a 3500 be stronger than the cast iron cranks used in all the other 3x00's? and is it true that the TGP cranks arent any different?

                    forged cranks are stronger, there is no denying that...

                    TGP: same crank. refer to above statements...
                    1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

                      They are in different blocks (with the forged cranks being the exception)

                          Most of the 3500's did. I've heard of a small amount getting cast iron cranks instead of the forged steel cranks, though. I don't remember if the VVT 3500 and the VVT 3900 are forged steel (I imagine they are).

                            the TGP crank is different, still a cast iron crank though.

                            the 3500 crank won't work in the older blocks without alot of clearancing to the block and/or machine work to the crank. But yes, it's forged steel (the 7484 casting).
